A close freind of mines neighbor recently passed away. He has what we think is either a 69 or 70 Torino Cobra or Taladega sitting in his backyard. At worst it could just be a plain old Torino fastback. The car has been sitting for over 20 years so it is pretty sad with trees & brush growing over the front end. It does have the shaker hood, 429 (i think), 4 speed & Cobra badging on the side, but it only has a bench seat & doesnt have a rear honeycomb panel. Basically he left it to his family to sell the car & other crap & divide the money up. I am trying to help his son find out if this is a real Torino Cobra or perhaps Taladega. Some guys came & looked @ it & told him that it was just a Torino with stickers on it....BTW, the car looks to be pretty complete & solid other than the dent on the rear left quarter. This could be a badass car 1 day....

If anyone knows where or how I can decode this vin # to find out the real deal about the car, & if anyone is interested it will be for sale as soon as he figures out what it really is....

Anyway here is the vin he gave me (dont know if its correct)

# 0R38J134901

& here are the only crappy pics I have. If u look closely u can see the faded shaker popping out from the hood...

That link wouldnt work 4 me, but thank u....

If i had the $$$ & the place to put it, I would pick up the car. Its badass & honestly, the guy doesnt want a whole lot of $$$, he just wants it out of his backyard. He doesnt even know how much to ask 4 it....If anyones interested let me know. First I have to find out what it is exactly & how much its worth.

btw 95vert, your pm box is full....

my buddy has a 1970 Ford Torino Convertible. He bought it all rusted out and in poor condition. Over the course of 5 years with his dad he fully restored it to show room condition. Those are bad @$$ cars. He threw in a 454 and it is one hell of a ride!

My wife would shit herself...rest for 5 min. then shit herself again if I brought home another car. And one that looks like that...but in my opinion and what I've read about the cobra torino it's well worth the shit I'd get. Honestly man if you can get a deal on it for yourself then do it. There just aren't any of these on the road anymore..there never really were any of these on the road cause not that many were produced. Something tells me the 69 is the prime year though so check the front headlights. If they are open headlights it's a 68 or 69 if it had the revolving headlights it should be a 70. Either way its complete and I'd bet money it ran when it was parked. Looks to me the old man backed into something big and hung up his muscle car keys.

I beleive its a 70 because the vin starts with a 0. i have nev er seen the frontend though because of the shrubbery covering it. i just gotta see how much the guy wants for it. i will keep u guys posted as soon as i find out some info..... I might be putting my 71 Chevelle project up 4 sale to pick this Torino up [Wink]

Its definately a 70....

Heres the vin# 0R38J134901

-0= 1970
-R= Built in San Jose
-38= Torino Cobra
-J= 429 4V "Cobra Jet Ram Air"

I dont know the rest....

Be very sure this is a car you want to keep for a very long time. Likely, it'll cost more to restore than it will be worth when you're done. When I sold my '70 Torino convertible, I only got a fraction of what I put in to restore it. There just isn't as high of demand like there is for classic Mustangs. The good part is, it will only appreciate in value in the long run.

the one in that cl ad is shit compared to what that one would be.this one is a cobrajet

Posted by EPIKMACH (Member # 7481) on :

That 71 looks nice. Its no 429 Cobra jet with a 4 speed though...71 was the year they also started lowering compression, which meant much lower hp [Mad] ...Its a nice ride though.

Posted by opie (Member # 7693) on :

0-5k It wont matter, the cost will begin during the restoration. If you want to flip it then the initial will matter. If you want to fully restore it then you decide if you have 30-40k to put in it to make an OK car.

dude if that car is cheap enough pick it up for sure!

That is a GREAT find!

Very very rare.

Posted by Jdub07 (Member # 2728) on :

So you buy it yet? What do they want for it???

Posted by 69grandecj (Member # 5794) on :

That's a great car. In '70 the hide-away headlights were normally on the GTs. That Cobra probably does not have the hide-away headlights. Most Cobra don't.

It's probably worth a little more than $5k. The air cleaner assembly if complete is worth about $2k. Done to concours condition car could be worth about $50k. You'll probably spend that much restoring that one.
