you can get an Ipod 1G shuffle for $99 shipped through apples educational website (free shipping) if refurbed.
$119 if non-refurbed w/free shipping for a new unit w/engraving

*the FM tuners of the low end mp3 players are largely useless

*budget for headphones if you don't already have a GOOD pair, the ones that come with the ipods are around $30 at the cheapest you'll ever find them. steinhauser/etc. upgrades to around $50 or so for the mid-range headphones

*display--- somewhat useful, ipod shuffle does not have one

*sound quality, signal to noise ratio of the ipod shuffle is either 92 or 94 db I forget, most others in the market that are cheaper are in the upper 80s range

*itunes is actually decent

I've owned a variety of the low end mp3 players and the shuffle is probably your best bet IMHO

if you already have a good set of headphones (not the crappy ones that come with creative/iriver or the even worse ones that come with sandisk lol), I would consider something other than the shuffle but not if you don't already have decent headphones
