Haha yes, agreed. I just don't have the appetite for the "other" way and can't move out of state, unfortunately. Given that I've only heard of three BAR certified swapped coupes in the state, I'm not too optimistic about the odds of finding this anytime soon.

Some guy did a coyote swap bar legal swap.
Just pay him to do the swap for you.
There was one Mach 1 coupe for sale.

I just seen a red coupe with all the Mach one stickers, sn95 ugly interior in SJ. I’m sure he had a swap in it. Shitty paint job. . I swear I seen it for sale from Sac a while back.... ?

The green coyote swap (RRRcobra) was a perfect representation of what I'm looking for. All things considered, I should've bought it when I had the chance, but I couldn't get onboard with the color as a full time car. I ended up going with a mediocre termi-swap hoping the path to smog legal would be simple enough; turned out to be too much of an effort due to time and cost to remedy trouble codes with the evap system, among other things. As simple as it sounds to have someone else build it, there will always be unknowns when it comes to the final product / referee inspection and I'm not sure any builder would guarantee that aspect.

Hey I have a smog legal engine swap. It was very hard to pass their test but it is not impossible. I got mine certified around 2013 at evergreen college Referee smog check.

Nice! Modular swap or other? I sort of regret not giving it a shot with the referee before selling. I didn't want to flag the car in the state database if it ended up not working out. All things considered, it wouldn't have mattered given that I ended up selling it out of state. Ah well, the search for another one continues...

I have a terminator swap in my 01 GT. What helps is to have the same transmission as the swap. The T56 harness plugs into the cobra engine harness. My 5 speed harness wouldn’t plug into the connector. Then I swapped to a cobra computer and I changed the power distribution harness. When I took it to the referee I showed them where I bought the engine and ran the smog test. When I failed he told me why and what they wanted to see installed. I failed 1 time for air intake tube not being stock and 1 time for having a x-pipe behind the rear cats. I changed the intake and installed a h-pipe like the stock one and I passed the smog test.
My engine swap was done when the coyote had 420hp and now that the coyote has 460hp, I think that would be a faster car for a stock engine swap. Remember the referee just wants to see a more modern stock engine upgrade in an older car and they will certify it. I had a aftermarket K&N intake filter with carb sticker and a Afco supercharger intercooler and some Borla stingers and I passed smog at the ref.
I would sell my terminator swap for a Gen 3 coyote with some long tube headers and a T56. But it’s a lot of work and time. To get it certified was barely $10 for the label. And one time I was 2 mins late to my appointment for the Ref smog and I failed the test.

Similar question as the topic. Very nervous to take my fox to a California smog ref for the door jam stamp. I have a 92 coupe original 4 banger swapped to a 5.0 of the same year. My worries are questions like if it was done professionally in a shop and how I got tags afterwards. Was hoping someone who’s done it could give any feedback. Thanks.

The smog ref will explain to you what needs to be fixed if you do fail. They only need proof of where the engine came from or proof of payment for engine. I would make an appointment and show up 20 mins early and watch the test before your turn. If you are late to an appointment it’s a fail. They will check your timing and make sure engine has all of its smog equipment hooked up. Then you get a sticker for your door so next time a smog is due you can go to a regular smog station. Mine failed for x-pipe installed and the tech showed me a printout of a stock cobra mid-pipe and said it must have the H-pipe crossover. I got it fixed and went back to the ref again and passed. I installed my engine and wiring myself. I had a muffler shop fix the H-pipe and my car got the BAR SWAP label in the door jam.
One suggestion if you do have turn down muffler I would change them out to a rear exit exhaust pipe so the tech can smog your car without damage to their equipment or getting under your car just to install the exhaust sniffer. And your car does need to go on the rolling dyno, so make sure your tires have good tread so they don’t cause the tech to not run the test due to bald tires.

No need to go to the state referee as long as you have all your emission equipment in good working order you are able to go to any smog station and smog it. I did the same thing when I had my 93 Notchback.

Resurrecting an older thread.
I have a 2001 Bullitt. I'm toying with the idea of a Coyote swap. I get all the referee stuff. But I have a simpler question, possibly.
Let's say I do the swap. I bring it to a regular smog place to get checked. In other words, I don't go to a ref 1st. How are they even going to know? I mean, it's a Mustang with a Mustang engine in there. I don't think the average smog guy is going to know A Coyote V8 from a modular V8. Yes, I know I'm taking a chance, but I wonder how likely it is that I could get it smogged that way. ??
