This might be an old subject for a lot of you folks, but when it comes to tires I'm cheap, so driving around on slicks has never been in my mind set.

Today I put my slicks on to break them in before hitting the track. Man what a difference in traction even on the street! Mash the throttle and go! No tire spinning, no BS just get up and go. Slow cruising @ 3000rpms in 1st gear I could stab the throttle to the floor, wot shift 1st to 2nd and still barely any wheel spin!

These aren't even drag specific slicks. They're road racing slicks from American Racer 26.5 x 8-15(on 15x8" wheels)". They actually have a fairly stiff sidewall, so going around corners feels solid.

Update:
I have had a best of 2.03 seconds 60' time now, but I found out my limiting factor. My rear axle needs a rebuild. It takes a few seconds for my driver side tire to start spinning while doing a burnout. So I probably one leg it for the first few feet until my driver side tire kicks in. Once that's fixed I could probably get some 1.8/1.9 60' times no problem.

Fortunatwely I have two cars, so I don't drive either of them a lot. I recently purchased a mountain bike too, so I've been riding it a lot.

It only took like 10 minutes to swap these tires on, so switching it back to regular street tires takes very little time as well.

Any of you guys ever been busted for non DOT slicks on the street? If so, what's the fine, or is it just a fix-it ticket?

From my experience it police don't even seem to notice Mustangs like they do all of the Honda/Tuner crowd.

just means you need more hp! in my experiences the tire will start to get harder from driving it on the street and not hook so well...never used those tires tho.
either way thats a clean looking coupe [patriot]

Even if I had 1000rwhp I would need more hp lol. I would hate to ruin slicks by driving around on the road and have them harden up. That would not be good at all. Guess I'll put the street tires back on and spin all over the place again. [Frown]

Thanks for the compliment! I've wanted a white coupe since I rolled my last one back in 2004. I've had several other 5.0's since then, but it's nice to have a white coupe again. My last 5.0 was a 91 GT and I ran a 12.23@112 in it on drag radials. So far that has been my fastest car. This one I plan on getting into the 11's and keeping it daily driven.
[burnout]

I used to ride around on MT ET streets, of course they are DOT legal. I have found that cops tend to look less at you if your front and rear wheels match.

Have em grooved, then when theyre spinning theyll look like they have tread.I ran around on tires like these for a while and i ran around for like 6 months on ET Streets, which by the way are NOT street legal. They are DOT drag racing class legal, not street legal, big difference.

i wouldn't chance driving them very far from home with slicks on the street. the tires should say specifically (at least m/t et drags do) say not for highway huge.

i get scared just driving my car on slicks from the trailer, to the street, then into garage cuz i'm thinking a cop will just start thinking i just got done driving it around like that.

i've also seen people drive their cars with slicks to the track.

I got these for a steal! Found them on Craigslist. Two pairs(4 total tires) exactly the same for $125 total. The guy had them sitting in his garage for two seasons and got out of Stock Car Racing. They were all brand new with stickers still on them and everything. He said they were never even mounted.

I was a bit skeptical how these would work at the drag strip, but after seeing how they work on the street I'm sure they'll do pretty good at the track. Especially since all of my driving today was with no warm up at all.

Yeah I know what you mean. The more I think about it the more I think that I'm gonna take them back off and put my street tires back on. I might get some drag radials to drive around on though since they will perform more like a street tire just stickier.

IDK 100% on drag slicks, but on motorcycle slicks they stop hooking as well after a certain amount of heat cycles. I used to ride with my take off slicks on the street all the time. Motorcycle slicks have a compound that is released at higher temperatures that will only last so many heat cycles. Just something to look into.

Just Get Nitto Nt555r's if you want traction for the street. There the cheapest and they hook great. Dont drive on your road racing slicks, other than the track, or to the track.

I did not know this. I looked up the ET streets on Mickey Thompson's web site and they dont say anything about not street legal:
ET Street
Worlds Fastest D.O.T. Class Race Tire.

World's Fastest D.O.T. class race tire. Same great features as our race winning ET Drag with a D.O.T. stamp that meets the rulebook specifications for street tire classes. Tube type for extra sidewall strength, better air retention, and more consistent ET’s.

■D.O.T. Approved
■Compounded For Maximum Traction
■Requires Little or No Burnout
■Engineered For Consistent Performance

Acceptable practice for rim width is tread width plus or minus 1''.

IMPORTANT: ALL DRAG DRIVE TIRES MUST BE MATCHED TO BE WITHIN 1/2'' ROLL OUT.

CAUTION: It is not recommended that radial and non-radial tires be mixed on the same vehicle.

All Mickey Thompson ET Street tires are designed for drag racing use. While Mickey Thompson ET Street tires meet Department of Transportation requirements for marking and performance, they are recommended for DRY PAVEMENT USE ONLY.

yes i have got busted with drag slicks on the street. now this was 15 years ago or so in nebraska. it was $50 fine with no points. those slicks will not work very well for very long on the street. to many heat cycles will make them hard as a rock.as for how long they will last? depends on the trips you take with it. the longer the trips are the faster they will wear out from the heat. had a brand new pair of bfg dr's. 1 trip to nebraska (22 1/2 hours straight threw) and they were bald by the time i got back. only ran 2 races in nebraska. no hype burn outs or swagin.

Went to the track today. I got 8 runs in. This is my first time ever out at the track with this Mustang and my first time on any type of slick tires, so I had a huge learning curve to deal with.

I had a best 60' time of 2.06 seconds and the worst time was 2.317. I had one other 2.06, and a 2.08 and several 2.1x's

I think the slicks are capable of better with more track time. Definitely a lot better than my street tires for sure.

Best run tonight was a 12.98@107.287 I was dialed in for 12.99, so I broke out and lost, but it was still fun and let me know where my car is at.

Nice ride bro. I talked to ya for a bit in the staging lanes. Runs real nice for 8 psi and otherwise stock motor! What exhaust and rear gear you running?? My 2.73 geared AOD 90 lx ran a 15.4 at 89 lol!

Thanks man I appreciate it. I have BBK Shorty Non Equal Length Headers, Stock H Pipe with a custom exhaust leak, Flowmaster 2.5" Delta 40's w/ 2.5" mandrel bent tubes out the back.

I think with more track time, long tubes, off road h/x pipe, a tune and take out some interior I could be low 12's and then finish up my suspension and cross my fingers and try to hit 11.xxx on stock motor intake to oil pan. That's kind of my goal at this point.
