Adjusted the timing to about 9 degrees. As far as the evap leak...tech said could be a leak anywhere from the tank to the charcoal canister. Im thinking (hoping) its the gas cap because they were examining it.

So after the failed test, i adjusted timing, got new motorcraft gas cap (didnt like stant), and changed the oil yet again.

Another thing, i notice on cold starts, my pass side tailpipe has alot more steam (not smoke) than the driver side, and pass side exhaust is cold at idle. Driver side is warm. Clogged/defective cats? Would that affect emissions part of smog test? TIA

Your cats definately will ruin your chance aat passing. Good thing a whole new H pipe with CA compliant cats is only like $850

That Nox is way to high.
As far as the evap use a smoke machine to locate the leak it can be anywhere.
You can replace the cap it’s relatively inexpensive.

For ignition timing you can only adjust -+3 degrees with manufacturers spec so that’s why you fail.

The smog tech ain’t going to give you free diagnostics if it’s a test and repair. If it’s a test only they can’t even diagnose the car.

High nox indicate to much advanced timing
Lean a/f
Bad cats
Cooling system issues
Restrictive exhaust back pressure
Vacuum leak
Overall your combustion temp is really high

I forgot to mention that after driving for a while (20-30 min) pass tailpipe exhaust is normal (no excess steam from pass side and temps coming out are the same as driver side..via touch, not infrared thermometer) would that indicate that my cats are okay as long as they are heated up when i have to smog it?

Set your timing to 7 degrees before top dead center for smog. Lower timing lowers HC and NOx emissions. Your gas cap was tested individually and passed. Do the smoke machine test to find the leak in your evap test. What the guy above said is true. The leak can be from anywhere. The line from the charcoal canister to EGR often rots.

I have an appt to get the evap system looked at and that will include the smoke test. In the meantime, im gonna be looking at the grommet where the fuel filler neck goes. I heard those fail after awhile. Also, how can you tell if the charcoal canister isnt doing its job?

Never heard of a charcoal canister going bad. It is common for the rubber Ford uses on fuel filler necks to rot with age. Wait until you get the smoke test results before replacing anything.

I went under and looked at that rubber neck seal and it is falling apart. I may change that, however i am still doing the smoke test.

That's part of it, but looking at those numbers, there is no way that thing will ever pass lol.

Mine weren't anywhere near that, and even after timing, new air filter, fuel filter, plugs, charcoal canister, and a few other bs items, it STILL Failed.

The state of Ca doesn't want us to have these, anymore.. that's why the limit keeps going down.. it's 100 ppm now... 100!!!!

LOL wat

Charcoal canisters are toast after about 100k.. every single one of them. Unless you know a magic trick to make your motor not expel any carbon emissions that collect in that tiny canister for 100k+ miles?

lmfao

Don't get me wrong, I wish you luck.. but this state has gotten out of hand.

Seems of all the mustangs I know on the road, almost all of them require an illegal smog.. lol.

Just FYI, I smogged a '79 Pinto earlier this year with the original charcoal canister and at least 230k miles (it's possible it has up to 430k miles) and it passed with flying colors.

You don't need to leave one Putin controlled country to live in another Putin controlled country. https://californiafords.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=063269 Register your Mustang in the gray counties on this map http://smogcheck.ca.gov/pdf/Program_Map.pdf Avoid orange ones. The grey counties only require smog when you change ownership.

And i'm sure that car is equivalent to a v8 mustang driven the way we do.

Anything is possible. I'm obviously being a bit fecetious when I say that, but i'd be willing to bet a large, large majority of them are toasted by 100k or so. I know every one i've taken off almost all of the higher mile car i've owned (so about 8) were toasted.

Those are pretty common to rot. I had to change mine also when I dropped my fuel tank to change out the whole assembly because it sat for 10 years.
Charcoal canister is not that expensive if I remember correctly.
Shake it to see if the charcoal is not solid.
Check the Charcoal canister vacuum line that leads to the intake manifold to see if there is any cracks. That can cause to fail Evap. Then the other one that leads under the car.

yea i saw the canister on lmr for 90 and its a motorcraft part. whats the deal if i fail a second time? is there a set number of times when you fail that they just call you a gross polluter and your car is done?

So if you fail 3 times they’ll try to help you with the assistance program depends if you qualify $500 bucks not sure if it’s the same amount currently.
Not sure how much a smog repair shop would charge for complete diagnose but they’re all certificated techs.
If I where you I would put everything stock back on. If it’s carb legal than leave it.

I’m not too worried about your evap leak.
I’m worried about that Nox and HC.

What the user #12534 said. Nox and HC both are lowered when you reduce timing. Does your computer give EGR codes? A bad EGR system increases Nox. Running rich increase HC. Weak cats can cause high Nox and HC too.

You can run 7 degrees timing and hope to pass or 13 degrees timing with a fake spout. Most people here would say 13 degrees with a fake spout connector is your only hope.
