Like the title says. I tried with the alum ford stamped thermostat housing on my explorer intake but started dripping while it was running this being with paper gasket. Better to use stock with just silicon or gasket and silicon ?

I've had my best luck with the stock housing using Fel-Pro blue gasket with black RTV. May sound like overkill but that's worked best for me.

I replaced the gasket on my F150 5 times before I realized that sticky sided gasket is crap. Stay with the blue Felpro and a little bit of RTV.

Yeah the sticky grey gasket is what I put on there first. Going fel pro and rtv
Anybody use the permatex the right stuff gasket maker ?

Yes it works to hold thermostat in housing.sometimes thermostat slips out of grove when installing.and that why you leak.put it on housing first and let it dry .and then mount it to intake.good luck!

If you get the motorcraft thermostat, it has a small "out of round" spot on it. Look on the stock housing and you can see where that "out of round" part goes in. You put the thermostat in and turn it just a bit to lock it in. No need for permatex. But if you get the standard O'Reilly's brand, it is perfectly round so you should use the permatex.

Thanks for the info. Can't remember the brand but it was from eBay and didn't dit correctly. The thermostat when placed in the housing moved around a lot

The paper gaskets with a sticker on one side from NAPA work well. People also use a rubber band and a pencil through the hose side of the housing to hold the thermostat in place while installing. http://1bad6t.com/clever_tips.html RTV shouldn't be required. Ford didn't need any at the factory.

True but ford was doing it all brand new parts.
