hey guys my 1987 ford mustang failed smog
heres my mods

302 with a b303 cam cobra upper intake 19lb injectors
shorty headers full smog pump and 4 cats i failed HC at 15 mph

The HC at 15 mph was measured at 151 limit is 87 [IMG][/IMG]

I don't think the b cam a smog legal cam could be wrong I'm sure someone will correct me

Not a smog tech but maybe if you post the entire printout someone here can help maybe theres other things that may need to bee checked, cause like stated above Bcam is not smog legal but alot of others have passed?

The timing needs to be reduced in order to pass HC. Normally buy removing the spout or tricking the inspector with a pnony spout if they check that in CAL. I am not sure if they do as i live in another state where they do not care what you do to pass Emissions. You are not that far out of wack.

thanks guys for the info found out i had 3 burnt spark plug wires and number 8 cylinder was carbon fouled so i replaced all the plugs hope it passes

A poor running engine is a tip off that it will in fact not pass a tailpipe TEST!

BUT!! How does the inspector know what cam is in the CAR?? The B cam is not that big and it can pass if set up correctly. He missed HC at 15 and is very close . Just saying!!+

B cam passes smog just fine. Even an F cam can pass smog if there car is tuned up and running right

hey guys i will be takeing it in on friday so far heres the list of parts i found bad not correctected

3 burnt spark plug wires
1 carbon fouled spark plug number 8
dirty air filter
cap and rotor had rust
smog tube that goes to the H pipe wasnt connected
i had a pcv valve attach from the pass side valve cover to the throttle body which i was is a big no no

As an official emission certified inspector we see this all the time. people bring in cars that need tune ups have CEL lights on and bitch and scream when they fail emissions. Simply put check your car before going to emissions not after it fails This is why states like CAL will never phase it out!!

Also change the gas! And for god sake, buy the Taylor wires. Other wise you are going to have boot melting problems, with the equal length headers..

Gt500 you would not believe how some guys and gals bring in thee cars. Absolutely with hard misses wont idle for crap and wanting it emission checked. The state and feds keep records on failures and base the test on the numbers. I for the life of me do not understand how and why people think they can pass a test with engines running like crap. The state banks on this all the time when renewing the emission contracts. If we all try and educate people of this maybe some day this nonsense will be eliminated. But if the state continues to have failures it is not possible.

that all makes sense too me. what doesn't make sense to me why someone would like to pay more to drive there car. A car that isn't running at optimal performance is costing the driver more money to drive it. As things get worse it then cost more to fix it. in CA if you fail smog test they can make you smog every year instead of every 2 years that again cost more money for the driver.
