I need some help, I am at work and on my way back from lunch, I tried to turn the key off to shut the car down, but nothing happened. I could remove the key and nothing happened. So I decided to let it stall. But the electronics are still on (with the key not in the car anymore) and I can't crank the car on anymore either. I can turn the key on/off but nothing happens. The remote to lock/ unlock or open the trunk don't work anymore either.
I don't even have tools to unplug the battery.

What should I do???
(96 cobra btw)

Looking at this now, it looks like the PATS could prevent the car from cranking but not from turning off, right? I haven't seen anyone with the same problem where the electronics are still on (clock, radio, etc...) and I can't shut it down, and I can't start the car either.
I can turn the key in either direction, but nothing happens.

Not sure if relevant, but the plastic part around the ignition key on the car can be removed by hand. It actually came off when I pulled the key off, and it's easy to snap back on, but can still be easily pulled by hand.

How's the physical feel off the key in the forward/backward movement WHILE in the ignition? Does it feel free an easy to move like there's no effort? Could very well be a broken pushrod to the ignition switch,a current issue in my own cobra,car won't start with a key cause the pushrod that run threw the steering column to the ignition switch is broken,they get old and brittle,if this is the issue it's very easy to tell cause your key will feel effortless,no tension cause the rod is broken,you gotta manually switch the ignition switch to the on/off/accessories/start easy to do,just pull the panel under your column and unbolt the 2 10mm bolts to the switch and from the u can manually start and shut off the car,go check your key in the ignition and see how it feels,also check to see if your theft light IS flashing but AFTER you get the accessories (the ignition) shut off..good luck man

Sounds like a broken push rod lol,go unbolt the ignition switch and shut the car off..the car can still be driven I've driven mine for a month this way,it's best and easiest to replace the column,there cheap and all 96-04 mustangs are the same just gotta swap your cobra wheel/airbag obviously,the rod is a PITA to get too and cost about $20-40 where u can find a column for $50 and do the work in half the time...

Yeah I can turn the key in any direction with no effort at all, it doesn't 'snap' from one position to the next like it used to.
I don't have any tools at work, so I am not sure if I'll be able to remove or unbolt anything.
I may have to call a tow which would suck :/

If that was the case, would the remote to lock/ unlock/ open the trunk not work either? Are they connected?

Also the Anti-Theft light is not on or blinking.

Well the trunk lock won't work from the remote cause the ignition is stuck ON also why the theft light isn't flashing,the trunk will work with the button in the glove box..the rod snapped simple as that,u only need a 1/4 ratchet and a 7mm 8mm and a 10-12mm sockets easy to access screw a tow that's $$$

Well I've had cars that disabled the remote when in the "on" position on the ignition. Your car thinks its on. Auto disabling the remote. (I think)

Dave what's up,take me off your ignore list [patriot] .easy fix?? The pushrod or the un bolting of the ignition switch is easy I've put this off cause I've been to lazy to get a column lol

Thanks but since I couldn't figure out what to do and I had no access to any tools. I ended up calling a tow (thankfully covered by my insurance). The car is at the shop now, waiting for a call to know about the damage ;/
