i currently have a 93 mustang lx notchback that was running absolutely perfect yesterday 9-21-2012 and then later that night out of no where it started hesistating in the acceleration and sputtering a little bit. i got home parked it. came back out few hours later trying to go somewhere forgetting about what had happened and then it would start, idle very roughly and then die. Now this morning when i came out to try and start it.. no go. just turns over doesnt even try to fire. i replaced fuel filter, fuel pump IS working for sure. i have spark. i spray carb cleaner in my throttle body and still wouldnt fire. My TPS is in its proper position as well. i have no idea whats going on

Got fuel and spark....maybe a timing issue. Check if the distributor moved somehow.

that was my initial thought as well.

do a compression check also

Maybe the pickup in the distributer is no good. That happened to me the plastic somehow like disintegrated . It sputtered and misfired. Because it was bouncing around inside

okay ive replaced fuel filter, confirmed my fuel pump is working, im getting spark, my distrubutor and timing are good (including cap and rotor) engine turns over and tries to fire now but still wont.

i was told by a friend it could either be my ECU, nuetral start (safety) switch or maybe that my alarm system is some how involved?

your engine wont trun over if it was bad

At this point I'd go with what was said above , compression test , if you find a low hole then leak down test. Also check for any sort of vacuum leaks

I'll bet computer, have one of your buddy's come by with there mustang and try out there computer in your car.

ya i got it to start but it wont idle without some assistance and even then when i apply load to the car it dies, i just adjusted the timing and made sure it was in its proper place. still no clue. It will start but it takes some cranking over. and its back fires really bad ass well when revved

would an inadequacy of fuel pressure from my fuel pump cause it to run like this?, i know i'm getting fuel to my fuel rail but i'm unsure on whether or not it's maintaining that pressure.

put a gauge on the rail
to eliminate that possibility

OR you can do a quickie check which is better and run line under the hood to the passenger who can hold a gauge spliced into the rail, then not just idle....you can look for fluctuations

prob cheaper to replace the FPR, but if you had the stuff id test it first

you've eliminated spark...if its not fuel, id look for VAC issues

Check the computers max fuse, and your charging system

Fusible link or PCM related.

Still haven't done a compression or leak down test? Shouldve started there(potentially) save some money!!

My porsche did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Turned out to be the idle air control sensor was gummed up on the throttle body. Id take the throttle body off and give it all a good cleaning.

I was the coil!!! even though i was getting spark it just wasn't enough to get my engine to fire. replaced it tonight and she fired up and ran like nothing ever happened. so i take it the sputtering and back firing was simply due to poor ignition:) Thanks for all your help guys
