Its only happened 1 time.. In my 94', I was backing out of a driveway.. I was feathering the gas and noticed that my stereo restarted.. no big deal. While I was driving on the freeway doing 65, I noticed my stock tach jumping up and down. I revved my engine with the clutch in while I was on the freeway and my stereo restarted again and I noticed my battery light flash on and off for less than a half second. It flashed again when I revved it again. Pulled over, turned off the car, checked all of my connections on the battery and the alternator and everything was tight and clipped in properly. Off the top of my head, sounds like my alternator is taking a dump. I find it strange that my tach ended up jumping around, but since I saw the battery light, sounds like a charging related problem. Anybody got any different opinions? [Confused]

Sounds like the voltage regulator on the alt. is going out.

did you have the engine out? Sounds like a possible loose ground connection.

Battery is clean, motor has never been out.. 122k original miles. Still thinkin its the alternator. Might upgrade to a new one anyways. Thanks for the input guys [patriot]

if you trace the neg terminal there is a ground from the main engine wire harness coming from the drivers side. There is a fuse in a holder there. i always cut that out and solder a new wire straight to the ground. This has solved some wire issues in the past for me. If not is better than that janky fuse in there. totally forgot about that trick. Another trick to see if your alt is good is to start the car then pull off the positive terminal off the battery, if your car is still running then your alternator is good

If there is a fuse, I'm pretty sure its there for a reason. And the battery trick is a hit or miss. Doesn't always work. Just because the car runs when you take off the terminal doesn't mean its good.. that doesn't always work.

The battery "trick" is a great way to kill an alternator when you disconnect the batt cable the alt has nowhere to put its charge and can overload and fry the regulator.

I had something simalar and a burnt plastic smell. It ended up being the alternator wires being a little burnt and crucnhy due to the nut holding them on not being tight. Tightened it up and everything was good even the volt meter was showing more voltage than it did before. Must have been like this for awhile.

Your voltage regulator is bad in your alternator so it doesn't provide ground when running so the charge light comes on also you probably have a short to power somewhere by your clutch pedal area I suggest start the car and wiggle some wires up there see if you can see or recreate the issue. The cable trick for the battery can fry your computer and damage a lot more. The fusible link is an important piece. If you cut it out you increase the risk of fires and total circuit breakdown. Before you guys start giving out tricks please be sure that it's a smart and safe trick. I just read hella suggestions on how to fuck off a whole car lol
