i just scored a oil cooler from a chp motor, i figure it would be good to install before i take the car to the track this spring. anyone have any links, articles or advice? i have just the sandwich adapter & hoses, and im going to buy a flex-a-lite cooling unit (the one that goes in front of the radiator)
thanks

your going to need to tap the cooler into the cooling system. If you add a ft mount it's not going to do anything. The chp cooler runs coolant through it to cool the oil on the hoses.
I'm not sure if anybody makes them anymore but the 93 cobra came with the cooler and maybe the hoses are avail. still.

I have a fluidyne radiator with fittings for trans. cooler lines that arent being used. So just run the cooler hoses to that? Wont that keep the oil too hot?

The problem is it need to be ran into moving Coolant, the cobra sandwich cooler run oil throught the center and coolant run around the outside (via the 2 hose barb coming off of the cooler. Sorta like this pic but this is for a new boss 302.

Damn dat pic didn't come out right These are the ones u need. If it's a factory style oil cooler.
http://www.performancepartsinc.com/images/ochoses.jpg
If it's an aftermarket like a fluidyne then the oil would run out to the cooler.

It won't be too hot. It depends on the motor but oil temps are normally 40-60 deg above water temps. You do want oil temps at least at 220 to boil off any gasoline or condensation.
The only question is whether that trans cooling section of the radiator can handle the oil pressure. I don't know what transmission pressures are to compare. Fluidyne should be able to answer that. I suspect it would be fine.

Ok i figured it out. I got a oil cooler from a chp motor, i just went and looked at a ex-chp and the inlet comes from the water pump and the outlet goes to the heater pipe on the lower intake. So it basically hooks up inline between to two. Very easy install

I like my explorer oil cooler, finding the right hoses that worked was a bit of a PITA but it works great at keeping the oil temps down.
makes changing the oil filter cleaner too, it even has a little lip on the bottom edge to aim the oil out to the front.

^^^Thats a nice setup, what years had those kind of oil coolers?

from what I've read it was basically any 5.0 explorer, but it may have been limited to the 4x4's.

Hey blind. Are you using explorer block?

nope, just a stock foxbody block, I swapped the explorer cooler onto it. That picture is about 4 years old though, there's a lot more crap in the engine bay now with the a/c, p/s, and procharger on that side.

^^^ I've been thinking of doing this a long time ago, but couldn't find any information about which hoses to use, would you mind sharing any info about the hoses you used? did you notice any increase in water temperature? can you use FL-1A filter?

Water temp did not change at all, but as you can see I ran a large fluidyne radiator and a mark8 electric fan. Oil temp matched the water temp once this was installed, where as before while out at the track (open track events) it would get up near 280* sometimes.
It uses the fl-820s, which is the same as all modulars and cobra's. It's nice because it's the same filter as the one for my `97, my wifes `08 GT, and my harley truck, so I don't need to keep a stockpile of different kinds on hand in the garage for oil changes.
I used these hoses -
Motorcraft KM3051 hose
Motorcraft KM3065 hose

In that picture I was running a 1985 Crown vic 5.8L waterpump. It spins the opposite direction of the foxbody stock pump allowing me to run the short belt with no p/s or a/c with the stock tensioner setup and ZERO belt slip. I had to drill out the holes on the waterpump pulley a little bit to get it to mount onto the crown vic pump because the bolt pattern was a little larger, otherwise it's just bolt in and go, that was a 43" belt with the smog pump hooked up.

stock from my donor, so it was an `87 timing cover. My new build I put a later model one on that didn't have that funky casting for a fuel pump just begging to be drilled out.

it lines up just like the stock waterpump does, the only mod being the pulley bolt holes a little larger pattern. I don't know if the `80's crown vic 5.8L is the only one that's perfect, I think a v-belt small block waterpump is all that's important, because those all spin the other way.
Never went over 200* even on 110* days out at willow springs.

it's really the best way to go without a/c or p/s. I tried several other methods, including march alternator brackets with a tensioning rod.
they all had belt squeal on start up, all of them. The only one that worked for me is what's pictured there.

I am currently running this setup on my 97, these were installed on the mid 80 cop cars and taxis
The electric fan is from an 86 Ninja radiator fan and fit perfectly. It is wired into the fan high speed circuit.
