So I'm doin a 5speed swap for a friend. It's a 90 lx 5.0 droptop. So everything is on but it won't go into gear when engine running I've adjusted the cable different ways nd still nothing?

do you have a quadrant, firewall adjuster or adjustable cable?

No everything is stock. Everything was used except clutch kit nd flywheel. I've tried slamming on the pedal up me down to adjust it but nothing. Also the clutch pedal is really stiff

Fork in place? Nd how sure r u that the tranny went in gear before installing?

I'm pretty sure I put the clutch on right done a couple clutches already. Fork is on good. Tranny goes into to gear with car off. Don't knw anything about the tranny he just said he got it from haulinass

Does it grind trying to go into gear with the car on? Or does it 100% block it out?

Posted by S-BAYSTANG-J (Member # 10728) on :

No grinding at all 100% blocked

sounds like something in the Tranny is off. cause even with the clutch not pushed in at all you should be able to jam the car into gear an it would grind. blocking out 100% sounds like something inside the tranny is not right.

If it shifts when off and not on there is def an issue in the clutch adjustment. If you have any question feel free to call me

Not necessarily true. If the clutch is not engaging at all it will keep the trans from going into gear. Jamming it into gear (often times it wont) can only damage the transmission. Have a customers car in the shop that came in with this same issue. His car was fine prior to a simple clutch and cable install at a "transmission shop". Stock "replacement" clutch and cable. Car will not shift into gear when the car is on. Have to put the car in gear, then start it just to move it. Putting an OEM Quadrant and Cable in to solve the issue.

Ive had past issues with aftermarket and parts store replacement clutch cables doing this same thing. Actually had one break before even backing out of the shop. Removed and installed a Ford OEM Unit and problem was solved.

Also make sure that the quadrant is in fact adjusting properly. There should be a series of clicks when doing so. Very common that they can be worn out and they simply will not have a proper adjustment left in it. They will catch the next "good" set of teeth and what you think is adjusted, is way off.

I had this same problem when my clutch cable went bad. No matter how much I adjusted it I could not put my car into any gear while the car was running, so this sounds like there is an adjustment problem to me. Sounds like the clutch isn't being pushed in all the way. This is where the multi hook aluminum quadrant, firewall adjuster, and adjustable clutch cable come in really handy.

How? It would be impossible to bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel with the disc backwards [Confused]

i had the same problem, wouldnt go into gear when on but would when off, didnt think it was the clutch cuz it was brand new with 2k on it but it was, what happend was when i installed the clutch the cable was kinda tite and made the throwout bearing kinda ride on tge pressure plate therefor wearing out the face of the pressure plate ,not much but enough for it to not engage, you could clearly see the wear on both throwout bearing and pressure plate, both were new.........

so te way i fixed it was....new clutch, new throwout bearing AGAIN,and to address the issue i bought a steeda quadrant, adjustable cable and firewall adjuster, then i left the peddle with a bit of play so it wouldnt ride on preassure plate which could lead to the wear

you could just buy a new pressure plate ,i didnt have the time to order a spec 2 pressure plate,so i coukd re-use my disc,i had a soec 3 layin around

So I took tranny of nd found clutch fork with a lot of wear and also one of the tabs streched out. So I closed the gap reinstaled everything now goes in to 1-4 but no 5 or rev. It grinds. Also its hard to go in 1-4 but they go in with engine running is it time for a new fork?

IVE DONT A FEW FIXS FROM PEOPLE PUTING CLUTCHS IN BACKWARDS BUT IT MAKES ALOT OF NOISE CLUTCH RUBBS ON FLYWHEEL BOLTS...SOUNDS TO ME YOU HAVE A WARN QUADRANT..U HAVE TO REMEMBER STOCK ONES ARE 10 PLUS YEARS OLD AND EVEN IF THEY WORKED BEFORE A NEW CLUTCH AND A NEW POSTION MY NOT PUT A ADJUSTABLE CABLE IN AND RETRY I CAN ALMOST GUARENTEE IT WILL WORK....I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT HAULIN WOULD SELL A BAD TRANS.
