check engine light.

start teh car. with it running rev it up from the throttle body, and watch to see if the diaphram in the EGR is going in and out. thats a possible sign of failure

Well i start the car and the engine light turns on and it idles really ruff and keep shutting off and smells really rich and i gotta keep my foot on the gas just to keep it running, then if i turn it off and let it sit then try it again it will start up and idle perfect and engine light will be off. [Confused]

I had the same symptoms...I just ended up changing out the O2's, EGR Valve, and the EGR Valve position sensor...all good after that.

EGR valve is pretty easy to diagnose if you have a check engine light and an OBD I reader. The OBD I readers are only $29 at autozone and very much worth having if you have any OBD I cars. There's also a way to check your check engine light codes with a test light I just can't remember off the top of my head.
I had to replace my EGR because it was bad. I had a pretty good idea because my cars NOX was high when I went to smog then the OBD I reader confirmed it was the EGR.

if you dont have a reader, look up the paperclip trick. im not sure what 2 terminals need to be bridged, but its hella easy. it may even be in the chiltons/haynes manuals

a stuck open egr valve will cause this. to check if the egr is working, hook up a hand vacuum pump to the vacuum port and with the engine at idle open the valve the engine should stumble and die if everything is working
