wow, its been while since ive been on calfords, my mustangs been sitting around but need some help fellas...

ok, i have a 1989 mustang 5.0 manual trans.

transmission is shot and i want to "upgrade" to something better.

So my questions is first, what comes stock in my car? t5? t45?

and "what can i upgrade to?" maybe something out of a newer mustang?

What can i drop in with Min modifications?

and with what clutch??

thanks in advance for everyones help!!

T5 is what you have now; an easy upgrade with the least amount of mods would be a TKO 500/600.

The TKO's are alot stronger then a stock T5 but dont shift as well in the higher rpm's as well as the T5 (stock vs stock), parts you will need besides the trans/bell are new driveshaft yoke to match the spline count on the TKO, shifter, transmission crossmember (can use a stock crossmember but will need slight modifications to work with the TKO, and a new 26 spline clutch disc if needed for your TKO (TKO 600 has a 26 spline input

another option is to upgrade the T5 to an Astro or G-force gear kit. both kits can handle upto 500+ tq

sic9250 had a tremec 3550 for sale, and there is a bell housing for sale in the for sale section as well. Then re-use your clutch fork, pick up a new clutch that matches the input shaft either 10 spline or 26 spline. You can cut the shit out of the stock k-member to make it work, or buy a stifflers tubular that will add strength. http://buystifflers.com/1979-1993MustangTransmissionCrossmember.aspx

You dont have to cut anything out of the k member and the crossmember to use is a aod the tremec 3550 will bolt right up to it no mods stock drive line works just and aod yoke works too 3550 only idk about the tko's

Why even consider a outdated 3550 when the better option available is the TKO 500 or 600.

for the TKO you will need a different splined driveshaft yoke

No question. Astro. They are a little noisy but for the most part bulletproof.

go with the tko 500/600 you will be very happy with it and never break it unless u push more than 600 ftlbs of torqe and only need a new yoke and clutch /bellhousin and it bolts right in no problem

its sold as a stronger gear kit for T5's, rebuild kits are sold separate from a gear kit.

The only difference is 10 spline vs 26 spline 3550 is exacly the same as tko 500 and the 3550 forsale above is already upgraded to the 26 spline.. do your own research before you buy some people on here dont know their shit.

TKO 500 rated up to 500 ft/lbs
TR 3550 rated up to 350 ft/lbs

wow thats a big difference in tq capacity to be the same transmission. yes TKO 500/600 are based off of the original TR 3550 but they are not the same....a 26 spline input on a 3550 does not increase the rating by 150 ft/lbs and make it a TKO 500.....maybe the equivalent of an early TKO/TKO II

How was this transmission improved? The 83mm center distance was maintained, and upgraded the counter shaft from a 3 piece to a one piece design. All the gears and shafts were upgraded to a higher alloy steel, while the aluminum shift forks were replaced with steel forgings and completely redesigned.

If its worth the extra cash go for it I have not had any problems with my tremec and I drive my car like I stole it. My tremec 3550 tkoII holds 475lbs. torque. tko 500 is 500 lbs. torque the 350#torque rating above is from a standard 3550

TR 3550
TKO
TKO II
TKO 500
TKO 600
^^ all are separate transmissions but still in the same family of transmission design (the original TR 3550). TR 3550 is not the same as a TKO II. example world class T5 from 1984 mustang rated at 265 ft/lbs, world class T5 from a 93 rated at 300 ft/lbs. difference is gear material and gear pitch = stronger with same exact design.

so what would be the difference between a TR 3550 with a upgraded 26 spline vs TKO 600 26 spline.
both have the same 83mm center difference, same case dimensions, same mainshaft......maybe they used magic.

my post way above was about the ORIGINAL TR 3550 being out dated not TKO II you pulled out of left field. they are similar but not the same.
