i was sitting at the light waiting for it to turn green and the car started to sound funny. so i checked everything connections etc.... i changed the plugs and wires. the cap and rotor. ignition module and coil what should i start looking into now the fuel system. fuel pump sounds good i can hear it. i do get a smell of fuel not strong one.. can it be the injectors and even maybe the egr.... need some input fast please thanks.....

Aj at norcal . Around the block from you let me know ill give u his number

might be the distributor, the stator or pip sensor goes bad in them. also check the rail to see how much fuel pressure ur getting to see if your pump is bad or not, or hit the schrader valve with a screw driver to see if ur getting fuel but lookout because the fuel will spray out the valve.

timing is good fuel pressure is good changed some of the injectors out still nothing. i think its going to be the distributer bro like u said.... i will keep you posted. there is a poping sound it will make here and there. sounds like detniation going on in the motor coming from the driver side.

check ur firing order on ur distrbutor

79 cobra the firing order i checked 3 times not only that, but i did all that because it started acting like that other wise i wouldnt have replaced the list of things. 5.0 with a go now the pis sensor is inside the distributor and i beleive that actually controls the fireing order correct me if iam wrong anybody.... 2 tone,79 cobra, 5.0 with a go thanks more input would be great.

My guess mosky ...is one of ur injectors.when I was driving it was sputtering also while at idle u could tell something wasn't their 100 percent..either fuel or spark..I say fuel

Posted by 5.0 with some go (Member # 8248) on :

yeah the pip sensor is in the distributor it controls spark and injector pulse ...if your smelling raw fuel id also check to make sure your injector and or fuel rails aren't leaking while you are in there.

Have you cleaned/pressure washed your engine bay ? Somtimes water can seep down into the distributor and cause it to missfire... If not check the idle air control valve (IAC) or your vaccum lines.

Posted by VENOMUS PONY 5.0 (Member # 7785) on :

no i have not power washed it at all. the iac i have not replace it yeat vacum lines are all good. today switched out the computer and distributer that didnt help at all.... now iam wondering if its something internal... any suggestions for example a vavle stuck? a roller rocker stuck? something with a lifter. now the motor itself has no nocks etc.... but this odd sound in the off road x pipe that it did not have befor. its sounds almost like a little exhaust leak and like it has a mild cam but witch it does not have a leak or a cam.... what started it all on my way home from work this notchback i saw pulled nexted to me so i went from 3rd to 2nd so now iam at about 4000rpm so i tapped the gas pedal quick let it go then tapped it again and let it go then pulled up to the red light... thats when just chillen at the light it started to idle funny.

what about faulty egr

Posted by 5.0 with some go (Member # 8248) on :

make sure your maf is clean, might want to clean the iac valve, and check the tps sensor voltage. there is also the act sensor located in the intake that can go bad. have you taken it somewhere to see if its throwing codes instead of throwing parts at it =)

I doubt it's something internal but for save measures take both valve covers off and have someone turn the motor over without starting it and watch all the rockers closely make sure none are not moving watch ur valvesprings to make sure there coming back up. I doubt it's that tho. Did you change ur plugs? What brand plugs and what's the gap

Also you may want to check your electrical connections with a probe and clean the inside of your elec. con. plugs with a wire brush...also clean the maf with brake cleaner and change the egr.

plugs are ngk gaped at 54. i will clean the mass air even though i changed it clean the iac the tps i will see what i can do with that and wire brush the connections. by the way i took the car to nor cal customs aj plugged it in his computer and the codes were maf air codes egr map sensor. i changed the maf the map. checked everything else hooked the egr up cuz i had no vacum hooked up to it. so there is 2 vacum lines still not hooked up but they are are plugged because i have no smog pump.

act sensor whear is that on the manifold and what purpose does it have?

Posted by 93sspCOUPE (Member # 8418) on :

I would tightin up that spark plug gap a lil bit try the 40 to 45 range gap

so got a act sensor from 68stanger and he also told me about the fuel pressure regulator i never even thought of that so going to swap those out today and lets see if those 2 things fix my issue...?

Any luck?

im going through the same exact thing on my cobra. i cant figure it out. changed the plugs, wires, coil packs, and checked all the grounds in the voltage controller for the fuel pump and the grounds on the battery terminal. Car has regular voltage, and fuel pressure. Im thinking a bad ground from the starter relay or something in the wiring?? let us know what the problem is when u find out. hopefully that could help me.

no luck yeat today is monday going to wrench on it... swaping out out the sensor and fpr will keep u guys posted for sure.

Ok...ill be home at 3

so like i guessed that didnt help my issue out. changed out fuel pressure reg and act sensor and still nothing. plus i went ahead and dropped the gas tank checked the baffle on it and that is still solid tack welded in place. swaped out the fuel pump still nothing. SO AWHILE AGO I BROKE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD BOLT. THE ONE IN THE BACK OF THE MOTOR BY THE BELLHOUSING YOU GUYS THINK THAT WOULD MAKE MY CAR RUN THE WAY ITS RUNNING.....?( its been like that for over a year without any issues just thought i would throw it out there) IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE I MISSED FELLAS CHIME IN AND PUT YOUR TWO CENTS IN ANYTHING HELPS.

I say we think about this problem more carefully over some kabobs???

Did you ever try changing the spark plug gap? It's a easy try that's the most cost effective. Typically an electric ignition is in the 38-45 gap range points are 30-35 as points is a weaker ignition. Just like electric has it's limits. It's easy to burn tips off of plugs which widens the gaps then go to change them and just copy a gap of a plug you just took out. I'm prolly not right but I've seen some funny shit with wrong plug gaps. Ford says 50-52 but the wider you go the weaker the spark so it's worth a try to bring it down to 45 see if it makes a difference

when i put them in the guy at vic hubbards told me .54 then nor cal customs pulled them out re gapped them but i dont know to what. i will go ahead and re gap them again to 45

Posted by 93sspCOUPE (Member # 8418) on :

Yea just give it a try you never know it's the cheapest thing you could try

Posted by VENOMUS PONY 5.0 (Member # 7785) on :

dayum still nothing gapped the plugs and swapped out the egr and sensor with a different one. who recmonds a good shop that knows what they are doing.

Posted by 93sspCOUPE (Member # 8418) on :

That sux man I'm not sure of any good shops that could diagnose your problem seems like you tried almost everything that would affect it. Maybe your computer is bad I dunno. Pm me maybe I can come take a look at it
