So my crank snapped in half about 2 years ago. Knowing I wouldn't be able to fix her for a while, I registered the car as non-op. Recently dropped a new motor in and getting close to firing it up.
Now I have a real strong feeling that if I just drove the car down to get smogged it would fail. First I need to get the chip re-programmed to get the air-fuel and everything dialed in for the new setup. But before I can rev the motor up on a dyno, it has to be broken in (500-600 miles under 4000rpm).
The only problem is the car won't be registered until it is smogged, but I'm not too excited (and I'm sure the law isn't either) about driving around for 500-600 miles unregistered. Hopefully someone has run into this problem before... Any suggestions?
Thanks

its a catch 22
I cant drive the car because its not smogged and I cant smog the car because I cant drive it to the shop.
what about a temporary moving permit.
-------------------- It's NOT illegal. It's just frowned upon, like masturbating on an airplane.

I've been in this situation before recently. I'd get the one day permit and make a trip to Reno or something to get the miles on it.
But so you know, according to DMV you can still technically get a ticket. If you get pulled over just explain things to the cop and they will most likely write you a fix a ticket which gets you 30 days to get the car registered. You can get a couple extensions if you go past the 30 day mark if you call them. If you go past that you have to go to court with proof of correction or pay the fine which is about $500.
Good luck!

take his advice and your next posting will be " How do i smog and register and smog a car thats been impounded for being a unregistered vehicle"
anything over 6 months you will most likely get your car impounded... They use to give out permits back then dont know if they still do.

easiest way to put some miles on your car with out "driving to reno" your garage/driveway some jack stands and a day with nothing to do...

Thanks for the advice, checked out that DMV website. Found this link to the moving permit & temporary operating permit if anyone ever needs it. Permits & Decals - DMV
Just gonna wait till the car is running to see if it has even a chance at passing smog. If so i'll take it down and if it fails, go for the 60 day permit for $50. If it is real ugly once she starts up, just go for the one day for free.
