I jus purchased a 89 lx coupe 4cyl 5spd. I am going to do a 5.0 swap for sure but i wanted to ask for any advice/tips that could save me a headache in the future, i am curious if the year of the engine/harness doesn't match 89 that i would have to do some modifying to the harness, or have some issues when i got to get it state bar'd. Another rumor i heard is that you can swap a 5.0 and still use the stock trans/ rear end from the 2.3l. So i could do the trans/rear/gear swapp at my work... Car lifts make life so much easier! lol Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks for lookin

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=2.3+to+5.0+mustang+conversion&aq=3m&aqi=g1g-s1g1g-m1&aql=&oq=5.0+mustang+conver&gs_rfai=&fp=ca6b5a4f84435186 Just did a google search "2.3 to 5.0 swap" and all the info You need is here! ou will need to swap the computer and harness so the year won't be that important. You will want to find a donor 5.0 car "obviously mass air is prefered" from there it's basically just a big swap project. So star hunting for a donor car and have a plan for what You want to accomplish before You start, if You are going to put a 500hp engine in it down the line then a worn out T5 is'nt going to cut it ect. ect. point is try to by part's once, also when You swap the tank & lines it would be a good idea to put a decent 255 walboro pump in while the tank is dropped and bigger lines are alway's a plus if You ever want to make big power. Make sure to pay attetion to the brakes and suspension or it will brake and handle like a moose [Big Grin] .

the car never needs to go to the BAR, or smog ref, to smog, it will be smogged by any smog station as a 5.0 because the engine was an option that year.

you need to use a 1989 engine harness from a 5.0 and computer, so that the check engine light works properly and the car has a MAF sensor so that it is a legal swap.

the easiest way to do it is with a 1989 donor v8 mustang.

check the link in my sig for pics, I used a donor and swapped everything because I don't half ass anything I do.

Great info indeed,
I didn't know you could just take it to a smog station. I also have a 89 coupe I'm dropping in a 1990 5.0 engine.
I was concerned about the year of the car and engine... I heard the engine has to be newer than the car. But I guess not. Thanks for posting the details on that Blind [worship]

the engines are basically the same, you just need to have the correct smog items for the year of the car with that engine.

this has never been an issue for me and I've smogged my car 6 times after the motor swap, 3 of them at test only stations.

The only things I've been asked for is the carb #'s for my mods.

SO,
I'd have to swap on 1989 smog parts on my 1990 engine?Do the smog techs check for that? Thanks again Blind. Sorry 8YOURGM510 for somewhat jacking your thread. I'll try to staying on topic, Blinds right about getting a donor car...Its much easier than piecing it together Like I am doing. BTW Nice clean coupe you got there.

the 1990 uses all the same smog items, so if you have a 1990 donor your fine.

the smog parts required are -

same year vacuum harness, the 87's use a different style than the 1989+ with the smog tree.

they all require EGR/EGR Tube/Air injection pump + tubing, TAB/TAD diverter valves and sensors, EGR sensor (TAB/TAD/EGR sensors are on the passenger strut tower), MAP or BAP sensor, 4 cat stock h-pipe is the same through all years, 1989+ require a MAF, the 86/87's/out of state 88's are speed density.

You're basically just smogging the car as the same year 5.0, obviously you need to remove the 4 cylinder smog diagram and belt routing under the hood, though my `91 5.0 convertible which is completely stock came from the factory with a 4 cyl belt routing diagram, which I didn't even notice until one day the alternator seized and I had to swap it and install a new belt in a parking lot...that was pretty annoying.
