I know this won't pass a California visual, but I was wondering if this setup would pass a sniffer emission test?

The car is a 91 LX 5.0, 5 speed...The combo is...

-Stock bottom end
-Edelbrock heads & RPM II manifold
-E cam
-LT's & catted midpipe (possibly a custom 4 cat midpipe, but 2 cats at the minimum)
-C&L maf & 24# injectors
-Mac cold air intake
-Smog pump delete
-pullies
-stock timing & fuel pressure

Sorry if this is a noob question, but how do you guys think this would do with a sniffer test?

FAIL!!!

2 high flow cats would barely pass with shorties and would fail for sure without the pump.

4 high flow cats might get you there but without the smog pump to inject air into the exhaust and clean things up I doubt it. Maybe 4 high flows with the smog pump.

4 CA legal cats are gonna run you $400+exhaust work and that might get you through without the smog pump. Probably pass for sure with the smog pump.

That's my guess

not entirely true...even though every car is different. my last coupe passed with just dual cats...with flying colors

but in dustin's case, I would swap to stock headers and exhaust ....should be okay since you don't have anything radical on that car...

if you know someone who just wants to make sure it will pass sniffer, I would 4 cat the long tubes

I don't think you can pass without a smog pump. The clean air it pumps into the exhaust really helps pass the sniffer. It's supposed to burn spent gases but I think it just pumps enough oxygen to balance out the carbon for a reading out the tail pipes.

Running 2 cat mid pipe and LTs is very plausible. There are a good amount of cars that run an HCI combo and some with blowers that pass with two cats.

I do still have the smog pump, just don't have it installed. So you guys think that with this combo, a 2 cat h pipe, stock timing & the smog pump hooked up it will pass the sniffer?

My 331 passed with:

afr 185

rpmII

tfs1

bassani catted x

bbk shorties

fuel pressure at 25#s

***Stock 195 t-stat*** was the secret. It wouldnt pass until I installed it.

Dustin, I'd install the smog pump, get a stock stat, and get the car HOT before the test using 87 octane.

I think you have a 50/50 shot, depending on the condition of the cats.

Yes, sorry i missed that in your post. But I believe if you get the car hot it will pass.

Shit, i failed 4 times gross polluter before I got that 195 thermostat. The car simply was not getting hot enough.

Don't have the cats yet, but I plan on buying new cats & making a custom H pipe for the LT's. I will install a stock T stat too. I guess I will throw the smog pump back on as well...

I'm in the same boat as you. What cats are you going with? I'm having trouble finding ones with CARB number stamped into them.

Im just gonna get some universal cats, not worried about the carb #.

with the smog pump hooked up and cats and stock fuel pressure and timing you should pass.no chance without the smog pump.
