I just finished getting my 1988 mass air 5.0 mustang back together with new rings and bearings. I started today and was having a hard time keeping idle till I got it up to operating temp. then it held idle okay. set the timing to 13 degrees,fp at 39psi and verified the vacuum was normal at 14-15 inches with my f303 cam. ran the car for a total of 22minutes. I went in my house and my shirt reeked of hydrocarbons. I mean bad! So later on I decided to run the codes about 5 times... every time I got somthing different first time was 22,12- map and not keeping idle. 2nd test 21 ect sensor out of range. 3rd test, 11 ststem pass. 4th, 11. 5th 11. [Confused]
do you think I should suspect my Map sensor is faulty and ect sensor? What else should I do before I go any further??? Map sensor at autozone cost 66 bucks(duralast)
Kragen has motorcraft for 106 bucks [Eek!]
I may just go pocket one at my local junkyard

Hey , one thing I notice is the little cap plug on my mapsensor moves up & down freely. Is that normal?

Cap movement is fine. It's actually a retaining ring to prevent monkeys from hooking up a vaccum line to the port.

I'd check the FI wiring harness and the ground for it.

man, i might just replace the harness and grounds. today i went to start it after swapping map sensor from my other mustang and the battery was dead (10.8volts) I have no idea why its drained.
I pulled the battery out and installed one out my other mustang...now it just keeps cranking but wont start. I hear the fuel pump so its getting fuel. Im confused.. it ran yesterday.
very frustrating

I'm gonna check to see if I get spark in a few minutes. all the grounds are connected and the harness looks okay as far as I can see.

starting to think I should go carb soon.

[Confused] Fix Or Repair Daily I guess
the car is 22+ years old

No spark! I ran a plug wire from my coil with a spark plug installed placed it in from of my windsheild so I can see it. cranked it and got nothing. [Confused] ground issues? bad coil?
its a msd coil and I run a msd 6al box

Disconnect the MSD, use the stock coil...see what you get.

Okay,
I'll do it tomorrow I get home from work.

I was thinking it maybe the ignition switch burned out but I'll at least try pluging in the stock ignition(bypass the msd) first. and if that dont work then I get the coil tested.
If that test out okay then I may replace the ignition switch. Thanks JohnB

Thanks JohnB!
I did what you said and it started right up.
It still runs super rich. had it running for 20 seconds and I can smell hydrocarbons bad, and Idles almost wants to die out. This is even after I switched out the map sensor and cleaned the mass air sensor+new spark plugs.

This car does have long tube headers & a off road x pipe. But I had it running before where it didnt reeak or gas and exhaust once upon a time.
What should I try next? ect sensor?

I tested the injectors with a piggy back and 9volt battery and they all clicked open. [Confused] Thanks again
