I'm finishing up my 1989 Coupe Project. Started off as a 5.0 / AOD car I found in the local paper. Bought it from a 70 year old man about 18 months ago. When the car is finished (soon) I plan to post another thread with plenty of pictures and info.
I completed a T5Z swap during the engine build. I'm running a SPEC stage 2 clutch, 3.5" aluminum drive shaft and 3.73 gears.
The car has a fairly basic combo. Basically Stock bottom end 302 (std. bore) with factory pistons, rods, and crank. The block was gone through and I had the cylinders lightly "cleaned up" for my choice of piston rings. I had the bottom end rebalanced with the replacement balancer and new ford steel flywheel. I had the crank journals polished, added new bearings, upgraded the pistons rings, and fitted a steel crank scrapper between the oil pan and block.
I used a small custom grind cam from Hitech Motorsports and a set of AFR165 heads with 58cc chambers and the newer LSX style hardware. A set of 6.3" trickflow push rods deliver the blow from the factory roller lifters and open the valves through a set of Comp Pro Magnum 1.6 roller rockers.
To keep things looking somewhat factory, I chose to use a OEM 1993 Cobra intake. Knowing this lower intake is restrictive for the AFR heads, I had TMOSS port the lower to help a little.
I'm running Ford red top 30lb injectors, Kirbran AFPR, PMAS MAF, and BBK 70mm TB.
I had the car dyno'd at AED. Shaun at AED was very helpful and they seem to run a very clean shop. Shaun tuned the engine using a SCT chip. He alerted me to an ignition miss and he feels the combo is worth at least another 5 rwhp and 5ft lbs of torque once I've fix it. The miss occurred both at peak torque and peak HP on the graph. The engine missed at 5400rpm which caused the HP to flatten out and remain (rather than increase slightly) until about 5900 where the engine's power began to quickly fall.
The car made SAE 310 rwhp and 330ft lbs of torque. The dyno run below (the only one I recorded) shows the car making 307 rwhp and 329 ft lbs. The corrected numbers were 315 / 342. I need to toss the stock clutch fan, and get an electric one to gain a few more ponies.

Very nice! Clean too! Is it a smoggable cam you got from HiTech? What headers, midpipe, & cat back are you running? Also, I bet you would benefit from a better inlet system than the stock airbox/ribbed inlet hose.

Thanks.
I'm running JBA shorties, a BBK Off-road H, and some flowmasters. I don't think I'll have trouble passing smog, the cam is pretty small. But, no, it wasn't spec'd out as a smog cam or anything. Other than the cam, and off-road H, everything else is pretty much smog legal.

That is an extremely nice, clean coupe- I love the color! It sounds great too, and made good power. Congratulations on the tune and thanks for posting the pics and video.

That does seem low. My HCI, stock high mileage bottom end, E303 cam, 100% stock fuel system car made 300rwhp/320rwtq on AED's dyno with no tune....

Nice car/combo. If you don't mind, why'd you go with 30lb injectors?
Posted by threethirty1 (Member # 7814) on
:
10.3 comp, emissions AFR 185s, has a TFS 1 cam which I believe to be the weakness in the combo. RPM 2. A stock fuel system, 30# injectors. Shorties, bassani catted x. It has trapped 110 on bald tires with a 2.2 60ft. lol, so im not too worried. Ive been driving it everyday for 2 yrs. I know the potential it has.
