in my 89 the temp gauge doesent work, but when i drive it after about 10-15 minutes if i get on it a little bit it makes a pingin sound and if i shut it off it wont start for a while unless i jump it an then im thinkin as far as that the starter might be going.....

sounds like timing still, any time you get a pinging while on the gas it pretty much involves your timing, have you had it timed with a gun?
