Hey everyone Great site!
New member here, got a 98 GT I road-race on the weekends. The motor is pretty much stock except for offroad X pipe with 65k original miles. I've done a lot of suspension work and have 4.10 gears.
I'm looking at doing a PI swap (heads & intake) and wanted to know if the higher compression is going to be bad. The car already pings on 87 so I have to run 91 to keep it from pinging. The machine shop I spoke with said the higher compression is going to be an issue. I'm looking at used Romeo heads off a 04 GT. I will have a machine shop clean them and check everything before the install.
This is a weekend toy, I need more hp for the track. I run with NASA up here in Nor Cal HPDE 3. If anyone here runs with NASA you might have seen me out there with my yellow 98 GT #40.. I never miss a race weekend.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Another option I'm looking at is doing the PI cam and intake swap using the stock heads.. I'm also trying to do this on the cheap

First off, welcome to the site.
Do the PI swap. You'll love the change it makes in the car. At the very least, do a PI cam swap on your Non-PI heads, it's an improvement.
If you want to do the PI swap SUPER cheap, I've got a deal for you. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice JohnB!
I really want to get the best bang for the buck and the PI swap seems like it's the way to go. I've been reading about this for a while online. Just worried about the compression increase from the PI heads.

I've done plenty of these swaps. The compression isn't crazy, a lil over 10-1, so 91 octane is in order. I'd give your MAF a good once over as well, make sure nothin' is goin' wrong with it causing your detonation issue.

My (mostly stock) 98 was pinging too. I pulled the MAF element, which was noticeably dirty and cleaned it with electronics spray and q-tips. No more pinging.

Thanks guys, I'll give that a try. I do use a K&N but I don't clean them, I replace when they get dirty..

The oil from the K&N filer is what builds up on the MAF and causes the ping, its actually very common. They have MAF specific cleaner at most parts stores, CRC brand in a silver can. Get that, carb and brake clean will leave crap behind. You can use the wrong method of cleaning and still have the same problem. I did this and looked everywhere else thinking the MAF was Ok and found out that was my problem all along.... no fun wasting time and money.
Listen to JohnB, the swap will work wonders for your car.

Agreed. I always clean my K&Ns with water and compressed air only. Oilng the filter not only screws up the MAF but hinders flow as well. It was a while ago but I remember seeing a dyno chart that showed an out of the box Fram filter flowed BETTER than an oiled K&N.
