I was wondering what type of transmission fluid to use in a 1990 5.0 T5 stock tranny

u could use that mercon stuff..but theres different ones u could get..redline trany fluid.or some royal purple..

gl5 is rearend oil t5 take automatic fluid

use dextron/mercon III in all world class T5's and yes a 90 T5 is a world class.

all world class T5's 85 and up use auto fluid dex/mercon 3 and NON world class T5's use gear oil

I forgot to mention it is stick shift. does it matter?

T5s are sticks...AODs are automatics
Dex/merc III is what it takes but you can use anything up to Dex/Merc V

using auto fluid dex/merc III in your T5 stick shift is not a problem, thats what borgwarner (T5's original manufacturer)specifies to use in those manuel transmissions.
the reason to use auto fluid in a World Class T5 (thats what you have)is because they started using a thin caged needle bearing between the gears 1st-3rd to reduce friction. and to lubericate these bearings they switched from gear fluid which was too thick to flow inbetween the small bearings, to a thinner automatic trans fluid dex/mercon.
