Valley girdles are cheap ways to increase the strength of any ford block very well worth it and surprisingly not very well known to street bangers. Horsepowersales.com has a set for $250 and with those installed on a stock block they ran 1000 hp on that thing and have yet to split a block! Like i said very well worth the cheap price, and easy to install as well.

What's the difference between a valley girdle and an intake manifold?

It just seems to me that a valley girdle does the same thing the manifold does, hold the two sides of the block together. how would two little pieces of metal with a couple 1/4-20 bolts help you hold an additional 500hp. sounds a little fetched to me

+1
the website for the valley girdle talked about here says they filled the blocks with block filler on those 1100hp motors, I don't think the valley girdles were doing shit.
and the blocks split from the bottom up, throw a good main girdle on and that's about the best you can do.
a well balanced, lighter rotating assembly would help a lot too.
