my 289 was making a bad knocking sound so i retarded the timing. but when the car shuts off it makes a knock like a diesel so i know the timing is still off. i dont know how to check the "official" timing. so can somebody help me out who lives near elk grove? i dont have a timing light but i know i can borrow one from my friend. on the block it doesnt have a timing degree plate it just has a nipple over the harmonic balancer... so anybody have anyhelp? thanks guys!

Buy an inexpensive mechanical oil pressure gauge like this.

Look for this near the oil filter. It's the oil pressure sending unit.
Unscrew the pressure sending unit and plug in the gauge and check to see if you have oil pressure.
