What are your goals how fast do you want to go what would be the general use of the car. You could stroke a 302 or a 351 for close to the same money it's gonna depend I. What u want put of it

ive been debating the same topic... and it really depends on your budget. I want a street legal (enough) monster. you can do a 351w stroker and make big power on a stock block. But come smog or state ref someone might notice the slight size diff between the 302 and 351 deck. Not likely.
Or to make same big power you need a dart or boss block, hence more cost, but lighter and looks smog legal (enough).
I decided to save up alot and go with a dart based blown 347. Doing that verse a all motor 351w is more costly but big power, lower weight, and less of a smog related headache imo. [patriot]

i highly doubt the dart block in 302 form is lighter than a F4Te stck block 351w

If you are going to do a 351 the only advantage is doing a stroker 351. I have seen tests were 347's make more hp built the same way as a 351. ratating weight bearing sizes all play into this. Hope that helps.

what is the best year 351w to get??

A 347 will be a drop in install in your car and will be less of a red flag when it comes to smog. You should be making similar power to a comparible 351.

If you are gonna go with a 351 block then stroke it out to 393 and make some serious power.

I just went through this same problem and I went with the 302 simply because I have a nice exhaust and didn't feel like going the set back. I actually had a 351W built and sold it to my buddy. If you decide to go 351 look around for a 69-71 and if you get the heads with the block your winning big if your not ready to shell out for some aftermarket aluminum. Should you want to stroke it my cousin had a nice 418 built for a 94 and it runs hard. I just had a nice stout 306 built and invested heavy in the suspension. Only you can decide. Think about how you're really going to use the car and be honest.
