my starter has been acting up, we replaced the starter with a brand new one (thanks jose) but still makes this loud grinding and loud knocking sound. i thought it could be the flywheel which i'm hopin' it's not and i asked one of my other buddies thats also a mechanic and he said that i might need a starter with shims, maybe thats why he said the starter is not engaging properly with the flywheel. is this true? some guy from kragen also said the same thing.

They sell those shims at kragen, ive had to shim a few of them. Are you sure its the starter, did you look at the teeth on the flywheel or the starter when you had the starter out?

Basically a spacer that goes in between your starter and transmission where they mount together,to space the starter away from the flywheel.
