1997 GT Mustang.
There is a popping/tension noise coming from my front end when steering / moving from forward to reverse / reverse to forward / going over speed bumps / entering parking lots / bumps at low speeds / stop and go traffic...etc...
I suspect ball joints, but i hear that they rarely go bad, and when that do, your wheel usually falls off. I don't have the resources to pull it apart until this weekend...

My car is really low, Steeda springs, Bilstein shocks, Baer bump-steer, caster/camber...

Has anyone had problems like this before? I heard that replacing ball joints on mustangs often leaves control arms fuckered up so you cant install new ones, and you end up having to buy new control arms altogether... is this true?
any advice in what i should look for?

Bad sway bar link or ball joint/control arm issue. Best off buying new control arms. I wouldn't bother with attempting to press new joints in.

exactly what john b said (no surprise).I changed both at the same time on my saleen and the same noise your describing disappeared. I'm not sure how much new control arms are, but I went to a parts house/ machine shop and they pressed in new sn95 balljoints along with rubber bushings so it's basically a new control arm. the ball joints were $60 a peice and the bushings were i think $10 each so 40 plus 120 I got out of there for a little less than 200. Hopefully less than the cost of a new pair - Shit now I'm wondering how much new control arms are..
