So in a couple of weeks I'm going to be buying some heads for my Ford & I boiled it down to 2 choices the trickflow twisted wedge or the AFR 185 so if any of you could supply all opinions & information to help me make my choice it wold greatly be apreciated.

What motor is it going on? What are your goals for HP, smog, drivability, price, etc?

:
The afr 165s are comparable to the out of the box twisted wedge heads. The 185s will flow better, but it may be too big for your application if you have a stockish motor. If I am not mistaken the 185s will require the pistons to be notched on most stock piston combos. TFS has better heads too (their CNC jobs)so the choices are endless.

looking for at least 300 hp to the ground...has to pass smog...price doesn't matter...its going on a 302...will be a daily drive for a little while

TrickFlows are problem free, just bolt down and haul some ass!One of my cars has them along with an F cam and a TFS-R intake and it put down 292RWHP and 300RWTQ. +1 for Trick Flow

Here are a couple of options
Twisted Wedge heads, TFS stage 1 cam, and a TFS Street Heat intake
or
AFR 165 heads, custom cam, Edelbrock Performer intake.

GT40 intake will work great. My recommendation is to port the lower and the TB opening for some extra flow. In that case AFR165's or TFS heads will work great.
TFS is a great bang for the buck IMO

so far I gather that the AFR's flow a lil bit bettr but the TFS are lil bit less expensive...has anyone had or heard of any problems as far as mechanically or installment wise with a 302?

my buddy had afr a 185 setup on his 351 and i had a a set of twisted wedge on my 302...... we both had full bolt on........ his car didnt even see mine... TFS makes good heads and thier cnc work is sick....my friend had bad experiances with the AFR's ....maybe its just his heads but both heads i think are good.... i RUN trickflow on my stroker and it rips .....

My car put down over 400rwhp with a set of TFS TW heads, and that was N/A. Should be high 5xx or better on N20
I havent had a good experiance with last few sets of AFR heads Ive delt with
And as always the good ole reliable Edelbrock Heads/Intake combo will always make good power with a good cam the right bolt ons. 300rwhp is easily obtainable with this combo, and you can find Edelbrock stuff for decent prices!

My AFR 165 combo makes 321rwhp/339rwtq. It's a 302 with a custom cam and performer intake.
AFR's do have their issues though. The springs they come with are crap and the threaded holes are a little weak. I had mine heli-coiled.

ok seems unanimous to me that TFS is the better choice so that's what Im going with...but which one's should I gwt to go on my 302 that will pass smog
Posted by 2SIK GT (Member # 3381) on
:
the regular twisted wedge not track heat or r series heads

Kinda hard to believe these numbers if they weren't coming from a stroker motor.

i have ran both heads on same short block. the 165 afr's are a full tenth faster than the trick flow's. i have ran 12.61 1.66 60ft with trickflow's.
so far with the afr's 12.52 1.78 60ft. with a smog legal combo... well i don't have cats, but other than that smog legal..

If that's the case it has nothing to do with this topic right?(Stroker=NOT 302)"looking for at least 300 hp to the ground...has to pass smog...price doesn't matter...its going on a 302...will be a daily drive for a little while"

AFR is running a whole new hardware package with the same components off their LSX heads, including a different spring and 8mm valves. From what I've heard this is a huge improvement over their previous standard hardware package.
I've had nothing but success with the last 4 sets of AFR heads I've had, and I just ordered a set of 165s from ADPERFORMACE for a stock bottom end combo I'm putting together.

The AFR vs TrickFlow is one of those old..I mean OLD debates from yester-year. I can't believe it is coming up
Both heads are good tfs tw are comparable to the AFR165's. Really close. The tfs are a bit rawer (can get more porting done after the fact), but out of the box both of these heads are good for a 302. No problems with either, really.
Let the rest of the combination dictate what heads you want. You can't go wrong either way if your coming from stock heads

go edelbrocks and you should see 300hp. some people forget about those heads.
Posted by Greasy (Member # 5258) on

Because the only good Edlebrock head is the Victor Jr.
