If it is what I am thinking, the popping is a backfire caused by the engine running lean. The lean condition can among other things, be caused by a leaking fuel line, which would give you the gas fumes you mentioned.
You should get a flash light and with the engine running look for fuel leaking at the fuel line connectors behind the alternator, check the fuel lines that come from the underbody, check the rubber hoses at each end of the fuel rails, check fuel rail at the fuel injectors for leaky O rings. Also look at the fuel pressure regulator behind the throttle body.
Other causes for backfires are a plugged fuel filter, and the pump going bad in the tank along with the "sock" that strains the fuel before it gets sucked into the pump. and a bad fuel pressure regulator.
