Does anyone know how many catalytic converters you must have on a 1996 Mustang GT to pass smog in CALIFORNIA?

I believe they had 6 stock and the later ones had 4, really some are pre cats and it dosen't matter as long as they do the job, so if you have none and weld on 2 good working cats then they should not pose a problem with smog. Obd 2 cats are expensive though and you are better off picking up an aftermarket H pipe with 2 new cats.

wasn't there a post exactly like this about a week ago??

either way, the easiest thing to do is pick up a stock one from someone who doesn't need it anymore. the stock pipe had 6 but the first 2 were heaters. so i believe a 4 cat should be fine. i guess it depends on the smog guy...

Not with most Smog testers I have been too. I have tried three crappy shops and one asked me how many cats do I have. I just said I don't know even though I knew I had 2 cats since I had my Bassani X-Pipe still on. I haven't been tested yet though. All three didn't want my business since I have a Kenne Bell S/C. They don't want to look up the CARB numbers for it and a couple other items.

Anyone have a mod friendly SMOG shop in Sac or Bay Area?

My car passes hydro carbon testing with an x pipe and 2 cats. The only reason I would fail would be the visual. My smog guy tells me every other year to have the stock h pipe installed prior to testing but passes me anyway. My stock h pipe has 4 cats(96 cobra).

i passed with 2 cats here in the peninsula at this shop that smogs alot of mustangs
