Remember, by removing all your electronics the distributor will also have to be changed and you can't forget to have a gear compatible with the roller cam.

Yes, I prefer to just use a duraspark dist out of 1985 mustang GT with a 5 speed and splice it into MSD box. It will also have the correct dist gear and even has a vacuum advance but I always sprayed my cars and locked the dist out.
Worked great in my 85 capri.

You just have to be careful when you buy the dist. I had a friend buy one from an auto parts store and got the regular gear even though he told them it had a roller cam. It lost the teeth in a matter of a couple days. I'd just pull the gear off my original dist to know for sure, that way he can just buy any duraspark unit.

Oh yes. But even more care must be taken here as there is a shaft difference in the distributors as well one is 466 and I cant remember the other as it has been so long.
I prefer to dig around at the junk yard for them but I can tell you that the one you need at the auto parts store is 99% special order and yes be careful to verify it has a bronze gear.
You can also order the gear but like I said there are two different shaft sizes.

Some more helpful information from MSD.
Gear Installation on MSD Ford Distributors
It is recommended to send your Ford Distributor to MSD to have a new gear installed. The installation
process requires a press fit and the need for special tools to achieve proper installation without
damaging the shaft, gear or housing. If returning the distributor to MSD is not an option, a
quality machine shop may also be able to install your new gear.

1. With the endplay of the distributor shaft removed, measure the distance from the bottom of the
gear to the bottom of the mounting flange (Figure 1). It should be within the specifications
shown.
2. Scribe a mark on the shaft at the bottom of the gear. This will aid in the installation position of the
new gear.
3. Remove the original roll pin and remove the press fit gear. Use extreme care not to damage the
end of the shaft where it meshes with the oil pump.
4. Position the gear so the new roll pin will enter the shaft 90° from the original hole. (Lining up the
original hole is possible, but a new hole will likely be machined.)
5. Press the new gear into position on the shaft. Measure the distance as shown in Figure 1 before
drilling the new roll pin hole.
6. Carefully drill a 0.125” hole through the shaft using the gear as a guide.
7. Install the new 1/8” spiral roll pin.

And some different gear sizes. Make sure you mic your dist shaft if you opt not to just run the 85 duraspark roller cam (5 speed) dist.
