I go to Autozone to buy a new steering rack to replace the leaking rack in my 94GT. After leaving AZ, I get into the car, start it, and watch the RPMs fall back to 0. I start the car again, and again it shuts off after being on for about 1-2 seconds. I start it for a 3rd time, and this time ride the throttle and it stayed on.

I nursed the car 3 miles home with my right foot constantly on the throttle to keep the car alive. As soon as I let off the throttle, the RPMs sank to 0 and the car shut off.

Sounds like an electrical issue to me. Anyone been thru something like this?

TFI module maybe? Fuel pump sounds like it is priming.

Sounds like a Vaccum leak. Check the fuel pressure as well.

Thanks John, I will check those hoses.

I can't even hook up a vacuum gauge because the car won't stay on long enough for me to get a reading.

As far as fuel pressure, can I disconnect the vacuum and prime the pump and connect the gauge? Should read 39psi right?

Just started the car cold and it fired right up and stayed on. I hooked up a vacuum gauge and it was at a steady 18inches. I got the car hot and could not reproduce the problem.

John, where is the TFI module on these cars?
It is not on the side of the distributor. But maybe thats because I have an MSD distributor/coil?

TFI is directly below the MAF. Bolts onto the inner fender with 8mm bolts.

I doubt the TFI is causing the problem. These are typically go/no go parts. It's possible there is an intermittent vac leak, fuel pump is on it's way out, or your IAC valve is hanging up.

I just ran codes and KOEO is 111 and KOER is 111

so all systems pass.

I will pay attention to all your suggestions.
You ever seen an intermittent vac leak?

94-95's are a little weird. i've had a similar problem with a bad ECT sensor, but it threw a code. i've also seen the timing change on it's own and cause something like that.

Of course now I cannot recreate the problem that was evident all morning, lol.

We'll see how it behaves when I need to get to work.

I would start with the basics, check the grounds, the one back off the motor, I have had a few Mustangs where they werent connected and would run have the time, also check the ground off the battery, the fusable link would be the problem. Also check if you had enough gas, I have the gas guage read a quarter tank but be very low, the car would start then turn off, my racecar 88 Coupe just did that to me about a month ago. Also considering the mileage I would wonder if the fuel pump is going out, put a fuel pressure guage on it and see what it reads when the problem happens again. I have had a fuel pump act up like what you are saying, then work fine for 6 months then go completely dead.

thanks for the suggestions guys.

its difficult to diagnose a problem that I can't reproduce, lol.

I'll just have to wait till it acts up again.

I think Lee has it. Basics.. ever change the fuel filter?

How about that damned halls effect sensor (IIRC the name)thats located inside the distributor?

my old 94 presented very similiar issues before the sensor in the dist went T.U.

That is the popular opinion over on the corral too.

The 94-95 MSD billet distributors are notorious for having an intermittent fail. I replaced mine twice in less than 500 miles(the first one failed at 500 miles, you could move the wire harness and get it to run, then the replacement had a broken ground strap, the third one has been good since i had them guaruantee the test results). On the third one, I told MSD I wanted to see the test result printout before they shipped it to me.

They say they haven't had much problems with these particular distributors, but the guys on corral and stangnet say different. If it doesn't start, have someone wiggle the wires coming out of the distributor, if it runs, good, then you know. also check the ground strap inside the distributor, as this has come broken from the MSD factory. Good thing they stand behind their parts. I only had to pay once for 3 distributors! Fucking MSD.

my two cents
