The Trans Am was traded in for a family car (IS300). To keep me on the track, my father-in-law handed down (literally FREE) a '91 LX 5.0 AOD hatch to me. The whole car needs some work. The body is somewhat straight (no rust), but needs the bumper, cover and hood replaced... he rear-ended someone and it's been in the garage since.
The car seems old to me. Mileage is up in the 180k range.
What can I do with a budget of $10k - $12k (including body work)?
I'd like it to AT LEAST pass the smog sniffer test (not too concerned about the visual, but it'd be nice).
Goal is as close to 12.0 sec in the 1/4 mile without going any faster (don't want the need for a cage).
I was considering a 347.
Not too loud (it'd be nice to take an occasional cruise with the family).
Nice smooth ride without the look of a Monster Truck (good suspension combo).
AOD stays. Any shops do Tranny builds? What kind of parts would I need to have one built?
In the end, this car will be intended as a weekend cruiser car with occasional trips to the track.
Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to the new project!

go to the pick a part during the half off weekend for body parts off a 4cyl lx. since the car had a aod it probably rarely saw above 5k rpms so its just broken in
passing smog shouldn't be to hard using nothing but stock parts .art carr sells nice tranny kits. install a vortech s-trim or pick up a dry shot nos kit and upgrade supporting parts as you go.
get it painted cheap at like one day paint .
you should be at 4-6 thousand depending on what your combo is and quality of parts and paint.

you can go 10s pretty easy on a stock short block.
hci other misc bolt ons cann all be bought used for pretty cheap.
I have a stall for a aod and a kitted aod that im getting rid of.
i also have a posi and fms3.55 gears
I also have a cam that will still pass snifer but works great with a hci.
i would say if you shop around and buy used you can go mid to high 12s n/a on a stock short block for 2k with all other supporting bolt ons if you do all your own labor.Pm me if you need help.
