so a friend and i put a 200 amp PA alternator on a 96' cobra... back story is the alt failed and killed the battery... we get it all together and said battery had been on the charger... i checked avail. voltage which was almost 12v... start the car, run it for a few and recheck... almost 14.5v.... the dash gauge still sits just a little on the discharge side... also, if you turn accesories on, the needle dips more until you turn them off... the alt has been checked and produces what it advertises.. what else can i check.. voltage drop the battery/starter cables? shorted cell(s) in the battery? thanks...

the car does not have pullies, does have an electric water pump though...

If its the old battery it may be bad. It may show the high, good volts for a short term but it doesnt hold enough juice to last long term. meaning-100 volts in a tea spoon isnt as good as 50 volts in a 5 gallon bucket.
