i have a

trick flow street heat intake
trick flow stage 1 cam
afr 165's 70mm throttle body
24 lb injectors
timing is set at 20 degrees with spout connector out

it runs reals smooth but it seems to be really slow before about 3500 rpm's and then it really takes off...anyone have any ideas? [patriot]

ANYONE?

You have a tune? Custom chip?

Posted by 92stangLX (Member # 3252) on :

Your timing sounds like it is set pretty high. what happens when you back it off to 14 degrees?

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

i dont have a tune yet...it seems to run alot more rough at 14 degrees, but then again i dont know how the idle should be for that cam cause i have no past experience with it

20 degrees initial is way to high.. Something is wrong with your setup

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

any ideas what might cause it im going to reset my timing when i get off work should i try it at 14 degrees or less

How old is the balancer? It's possible the ring slipped. But ya, 20 is waaaay high...

Seems like you been had. They sold you a turbo instead of a charger [Big Grin] . JK yeah that cam should be kind of rough, and yeah your timing is way high. Lower it to 14 and work up slowly from there. [patriot]

lowered it to 14 the car just doesn't feel right it feels just like turbo lag only i don't have a turbo...could the throttle position sensor cause something like that???

What timing chain are you using?
Was the camshaft degreed in?

I've seen timing chains that were 4+ degrees off when on the 'zero' keyway....& cams that were ground 4+ degrees off from the cam card. From my experience this is more comon with 3-keyway timing chains. Typically I use 9-keyway chains & degree everything.

It either sounds like the balancer/dampner is off, or the cam timing is off. Both are comon.

Really, the dampner should be degreed in to TDC on the #1 cylinder to make sure '0' on the balancer/dampner is truely TDC.

Have you checked the TPS volts? Bad balancer is a good possibility also, whats your fuel pressure at? New filter(air, fuel), clean MAF, good tune up???

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

the k&n filter was just recharged, my fuel pressure it sitting at about 32 psi the balancer is pretty much new it has 5000 miles on it looks perfect on the outside i haven't checked the tps volts..what should it be at i have never checked one

TPS voltage should be around .99 volts at idle at the green wire. Like I said though I have a similar setup and mine runs best at 20 degrees, so then maybe something is wrong with mine but it runs great.

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

it does the same thing at 20 degrees as it does at 14 degrees though, the timing is not the problem

What gears do you have? My Power dosent come on until around 2500-3000rpm, I think that is where that cam is supposed to make power.
So if you have high gears its going to suck, because it will take longer to get into that range.

3.73's

Thats what I have, I don't know what the problem is then.

.99 volts at the green wire... and what else? is that all i have to do to test it?

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

it only bogs when its under a load, if im doing a burnout it feels normal but as son as the tires grip it immediately bogs down

actuly the correct way to check timming on yours would be to check the total at around 3000 rpm it should be around 34 degrees. Everything sounds like it is ok. I might try borrowing somebody elses mass air meter and just plug it in see if there is a difference. You might want to try running a compresion test on your motor to see were it is at. good luck

Did you maybe over-oil your filter & contaminate the MAF sensor? Code check?

Lems

Posted by OneBadHatch (Member # 970) on :

yea i did re-oil my filter but I looked at he maf and it looks perfect... no dirt/dust or buildup of any kind on it. my idle also really sucks for the first 5 minutes or so

Do you have a wideband O2? 32 psi of fuel pressure is a tad low. It would be interesting to see what kind of air/fuel ratios you were seeing once you hit WOT as I have a feeling you may be a bit lean. Seeing as fuel pressure is extremely easy to adjust, try bumping it up to 39 psi with the vacuum line removed from the regulator.
Also, what MAF are you running...pmas or c&l? As far as the timing thing goes, just remember that when you add an extra 10 degrees to your base timing, the whole curve goes up. That means at say around 2500 rpm cruise you're going to be getting about 50 degrees of timing adavance.

well i need to get a fuel pressure regulator first and when i floor it the fuel pressure drops to about 21psi also i set my time at 12 degrees. I am goign to install the new fuel pump i had laying around and filter along with the regulator...i dont think i can adjust the psi on the stock one but i dont know

When you floor it your fuel pressure should go up not down, thats your problem most likely.

yea thats what I thought... Now i just need payday so i can buy the filter and regulator [dance]

my buddys did the same and finally got the sample tube for the c&L massair it its fine now [patriot]

sample tube? also so i was looking at my fuel pressure regulator thinking that doesnt look stock...surprise its not haha im dumb anyway so i have a kirban fuel pressure regulator can anyone tell me how to adjust one of these? do i do it while its running or what im not sure...thanks!

Posted by BlueBeast88.306 (Member # 6360) on :

Yeah, it has to be running, losen the nut around the allen head screw and turn the allen head screw clockwise to raise pressure. If you have a C&L mas air you can change the sample tube inside for different size injectors.

My car does exactly the same thing. Weak bottom end and then pulls like hell after 3500. it feels like you hit the nitrous after 3500. I think its normal with our combo..
