I've got a 1996 Cobra. Was thinking about selling it, but 2 deals fell through and now I'm thinking about keeping it for a while longer. Did some routine maintenance stuff on it today, and now I'm thinking about gears (again).
So.. here's the pricing:
4.10's are $235 shipped
4.30's are $175 shipped
Most guys over at svtperformance.com swear by 4.30's, but seeing as how I might have a good bit of freeway driving in 6 months or so (I drive mostly streets nowadays, freeways on weekends sometimes) I don't know about 4.30's. Then again, when I was at Apex Motorsports some time ago, they said to not go higher than 3.73's, which the guys at svtperformance.com pretty much don't even mention.
Any advice?

first of all.. disregard the advice from apex.
373s is just plain weak fot 4.6s.. decent gear for 5.0s though...
Here is something you should consider.
Who should you listen to?.. people that will give you opinions on what could work on cars they've worked on or/and have an overall understanging of?
Or.. to people who drive the same car you have and have tested the pros and cons of several different gears?
Choice seems pretty easy to me.
What do u plan on doing with the car? do you go to the track often?
I have 430s.. and they are not bad at all.. i would have gone with 456s if i would have planned on staying n/a.. but i plan on using nitrous later on.
keep in mind that if you are a freewayricer.. i mean racer.. then 430s are not for you. if you are a 1/4 mile racer.. then you can't go wrong with those.
RPMs on the freeway will depend on your driving style.. if you cruise at 80-90mph on the freeway regularly then 430s will take a toll on your wallet. if you cruise at 65-70.. then the rpms won't be bad at all.
good luck.
As on modular fords and see what kinda response you get.

Thanks, guys.
Jmir - I've never been to the track, and pretty much don't street or freeway race. I get on it every once in a while, but I'm not feeling the laws and penalties regarding street racing in the Bay Area. Hefty fines, etc.
I cruise at 70mph on the freeway. That's around 2100rpm right now for me. I guess 4.30's will put me at 2600rpm, right?
Is there a chance I could go for a ride in your Cobra to see how it is? I'm in San Francisco and could come to San Mateo no problem.

I don't think there's anyone here that can vouch for me. I have around 500 posts on svtperformance under the same username.
Let me know.

Jersey (jmir) is a good ass friend and u got to understand that u are not really know here, but i know u dont mean any bad intentions, i'm pretty sure he will take u for a test drive.
Now my opinion about gears is dont get 3.73's i have them on my 4.6 gt and i still think there still kinda slow in low rpms, and since u got a cobra and about 1200 more rpms then me i would suggest nothing lower then 4.10's

I had the same debate for my cobra a while back. I kept thinking bout my freeway rpms and such. but go 4.10's. these DOHC motors really are lacking the torque of the line to get moving. if your really iffy then you can always go with 3.90's, only thing is tho that ford racing doesnt make them in that ratio. i think you have to get them from richmond gear

I have no history with the 4.6, but...
The 4.30's are cheaper $175 vs. $235, and if you get them and decide that they are too much for you im sure somebody will be more than happy to trade you some 4.10's for 'em
just my $.02

i had 4.56 in my old '97 cobra and used it as a daily driver for a while going 100 miles a day and i still avg. 19mpg. it was a blast to drive on the street. 1st and 2nd gear was like a train. on the gihway my rpm was up there 2,800rpm, but i still got decent gas mileage.
my question would be 4.30s or 4.56s, 4.10s wouldn't even be mentioned for cobras. now if you had a 4.6 GT, 4.10s would be great. these cobras love to rev. between the 2, 4.30s all the way no questions asked.
