Do I fill it up before installing it? or does the Transmission fill it? stupid question I know but I have never worked on an automatic before

the trans fills it

thank you! [worship]

its a good idea to dump a quart in it since its new it wont hurt it

No uncle bill, it just makes a mess when installing it. The pump on ALL automatic transmissions uses atmospheric pressure to fill the converter to the bottom of the hub.

i guess its personal prefrence. i dont like the idea of a dry start on a new convertor. and if you are careful there should be no mess

hmm...

Sorry, I've only been a tranny tech for the last ohhhhh 18 years, so don't mind me....

Or, you can fill the trans with a 3-4 quarts of fluid (if it is dry), start the vehicle and then top it off. Just like I have done to every overhaul that I have ever done (insert really high number here, something with like 3 zeros behind it). And, I don't have to clean ATF out of the bellhousing after stabbing a converter.

wow, 18 years as a tranny tech? did you ever work with Al Angelo?

Posted by BlueOvalRacing (Member # 1531) on :

No, but he does stop by every once in a while. I always seem to work at a place right after he leaves.

blueoval, in this case the convertor is off the flywheel. you would be installing it already in the trans,(no mess) you wouldnt start a new engine without lubing the bearings, why would you turn a new convertor without lube. dont confuse doing it fast with doing it right.

bill, only an idiot would leave a converter on a flexplate and try to install a trans. Are you really that dense to think that a converter, new or reman, is bone dry when you receive it? I can assure you that they are not.

As I said before, the converter is filled to the bottom of the hub when fluid is poured into the pan. If 2-3 qts of fluid aren't enough for you, you keep doing what you do.

bill, it's not a matter of me being fast, but it is a matter of you having no clue as to what you are talking about.

youve got issues blue, one quart of fluid well not fill the bottom of the convertor and make a mess, ive done my share. you may not do it at your shop, but other shops do, and it is a good idea to prime the convertor since the tranny doesnt force fluid into the convertor unless the engine is running. as i said before its a matter of personal prefrence. name calling and bullshit doesnt empress anyone.

bill, you are the one with the issue. The converter is SELF PRIMED by atmospheric pressure. Personal preference or not, I am stating a FACT, while you are not. And I will stand by my idiot claim for anyone that installs/removes a trans with the converter attached to the flexplate.

I only answer questions here when I know the subject matter, maybe you should do the same.

for the record blue, i have changed my share of trannys the r&r has always been done with the convertor intact. so its crystle clear, that means the convertor stayed with the tranny.
now i dont know what youre smokin but there is no way for the convertor to fill unless the pump is running which must be done by the engine running. now when the engine stops, "gravity flow" drains the convertor. do you really understand atmospheric pressure? i think not.your theory would have us belive that all we have to do is pop a hole in the top of the can and the fluid comes out on its own by the atmospheric pressure. what a joke. a good class for you to take would be physics 101.if you even do work in a tranny shop it must be sweepin floors. if you care to continue the debate, tag your it

Stop by sometime. If you are a betting man, I have some money to wager. I'll prove my point and send you back to Antioch with an empty wallet.

I was told to fill the converter with 1 quart by a very reputable person. And thats how I will do it from now on cause the guy that told me knows his shit, and backs it up with his car. I had not one drop of atf hit the floor on the install either. Not trying to say you don't know what you are talking about cause I'm sure you know 100x's more than me. But this is the first time I have ever heard to not fill the converter.
