does anyone know the correct backlash and preload settings for an 87-93 8.8 rear, and also is it the same all the way up to 04

I know for SN-95 Mustangs with the 8.8" the correct backlash is anywhere between .008-.012. You want to get them as tight as you can, because as the gears wear, they loosen up. I even know a Ford rear end specialist that sets his rear ends to .004.

.008-.014 is what I set them at. Like MF stated, go with the low side. If the gears are set at the max, you run the risk of there being noise later on.

well i'm not too worried about the 01 john cuz you're gonna do that one, i have another rear end i wanted to play with but thanks
