how did your HC numbers look? Clean your EGR valve and make sure you don't get any EGR error codes from the computer. advancing your timing will also reduce nox, but will increase HC as well.

Advancing the timing will defenatly make the car fail, combustion temp rises with more timing causing nox. put the timing at 8* and it will still pass when they check it. Apply vacuum to the egr valve and make sure the engine dies, if it doesn't then the egr valve is broken or the passage is plugged.

Everything else was pass but the NOx The smog place said it might be the cats. I'm going with the EGR route first Thanks for the help

Go to Kragen, Pep Boys whatever and buy a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass" It's like 10 bucks. Run it through one tank of gas, then put in premium fuel with a bottle of octane booster. It made my commuter car pass with 240k on the ticker. It lowered the NOx just enough to give me two more years.

Do what 5.0#4 said, and make sure you back your timing way down.
