Say the check engine light does turn on, and I hook up one of those code readers and get back a trouble code with some numbers and a very general descrption. How can I interpret this. Can I look it up somewhere? [patriot]

Well, before anything else, its an 01 escort. It had one fault: P0171 system too lean (bank 1). What is that! What do I do now? The car kind of sputters and stalls frequently at stops. Thanks. [burnout]

My GF's 01 Corolla threw that same exact code and cleaning out the MAF sensor fixed it.

So, is that what that code implied? Is there other things that you tried before cleaning the MAF meter? [burnout]

P0171 Generic System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Check for vacuum leaks or leaks in the plastic intake. Make sure the air filter is clean too. If those check okay it could be a bad MAF or o2 sensor.
