ok.. so. on the back of the heads there are the holes that are used for emission purposes. since my tranny is out i can see them and easily get to them right now.. since i don't have any of the smog equipment i thought about removing the bar that comes out of it and closing the thing with a couple of bolts. does anyone know the right size bolts i need? thanks.

Do you ever plan on smogging the car again?
Also, if you're thinking about re-selling those heads you might want to reconsider removing that bar.

there is a special insert that screws into there, any machine shop will have them.

Ford dealership will also have some threaded inserts just like on the front of the heads. Any hardware store or machine shop will have a plug...unsure of the size though.

ok.. why would it affect the reselling of the heads? i mean. it's just a screw that goes there anyway.. i'm in no way messing with the head itself in any way. car does not need to be smog for a while.. i'm not expecting horsepower gains.. just want a cleaner engine bay and the removing of that bar will let me change headers with relative ease and get to the starter a bit more quickly as well as checking the plugs.. anyone else?

spark plugs thread right in also...just crack off the ceramic part and thread in the plug

just thread it in then hit the white part with a wrench, or do the same with the threaded part in a vice.
hell I've broken it off before using a deep socket instead of a spark plug socket when pulling my plugs out, lol

i finally got off my butt today and tried putting a sparkplug in the hole and that didn't fit. the threads are totally different? Paul, did you try that on stock or aftermarket heads? thanks. guess i'll have to make my way to a ford dealership although i'm not sure what i'll be asking for.

Its the threaded insert for the accessory brackets. Clean the carbbon out of the head and then try the spark plug again(a STOCK plug(autolite 25's), not the 3924's you have for the TFS heads) [ January 27, 2006, 08:56 PM: Message edited by: silverLX ]

you dont need that for smog. those ports are only used the first few seconds of startup

thanks boss.. i removed a bolt from the front, accesssory bracket, and it was too small for the big ass hole on the head. I used the 3934 plug. do u think that would matter? wouldn't the thread be the same?

i blocked off my heads(w/dealer plugs) and when i pull my motor out for replacement i am putting it back to smog legal its not worth it.
and i have a hookup on smogs just not f*cking with it though

it worked on the twisted wedge? that's what i have.. i'll give it another try.. the thing goes in for a turn and then doesn't want to go in anymore, seems like the threads are clearly not the same though.. i'm off to the dealer today.. hopefully i'll get someone who knows what's up and not some retard behind a computer.

Here is a link to mcmaster-carr for 5/8-11 x 3/4 " stainless steel hex plugs, 5 for $9.00. They are actually set screws, but with some ss thread selant they are perfect.

wow, I would edit that last but it wont let me...
Anyways. There will be a lot of carbon build up in the threads and you may have to clean them out. Easiest way is with a tap, if you don't have a tap get a bolt of proper size, cut a groove up the length of the threads and it should work. Be sure to use thread sealant or it will leak.
These parts were used in the stock heads.

those holes are for the thermactor (air) passages in the heads, you can see the tiny openings in the roof of each exhaust port, so don't just leave them open. it really doesn't make a difference if you just leave the tube there, it's doing a fine job sealing up as it is. and what the hell is all this talk of plugs being different sizes/threads?? they're all the same
