I want to utilize a modular motor on my next project. Problem is there is so much variation, 2V, 4v and 3v heads eetc. I want to put about 400 hp to the ground. The crate 5.0 sounds like a good start but at $15,000 when I've built several dozen engines?
Common guys whats a good start?

400RW N/A?
That's very difficult & you're only real option is the 4V setup with a high RPM intake/camshaft setup with steep rear end gears.
My opion is that the 2V stuff is FAR better priced. They perform quiet well with boost (once adequetely beefed up on the bottom end) & make all their power below 6500rpm. (vs 7500 with a high RPM 4V)
My personal preference would be a 3.75 stroker iron block setup with CNC 2V heads, custom camshafts & 10psi from a turbo kit.
We saw 540RWTQ @4000rpm from this setup on 91 octane, 10psi boost, & only 11 degrees total timing. Tuning issues prevented us from reving it past 4500rpm where it made 475RWHP, but it probably would have peaked around 500RW @ 5500rpm.

out of curiousity, how much is he looking at spending for a 400rwhp 2v forced induction setup?

Depends...
There's plenty of stock motors that run around with 400RWHP & a good tune....& I've seen 380RWHP motors pop within days of getting a blower. A bullet proof bottom end is going to cost a few grand.
Price of power adder also is a huge variable. Nitrous kits sell for as low as a few hundred....the above turbo kit cost $6K (with K-member, A-arms, fuel pump, injectors, mass-air, intercooler, etc, etc) it's a FULL kit. Kenne bell kits are around $5K.
