My Jeep won't start [Frown] It'll start cold and runs great but if i turn it off i'll be lucky to get it started again. I checked the spark and its nice and strong, the smell of gas is over powering so its getting gas. I can't figure it out. The wires at the coil aren't giving 12volts though, i don't know if it should be. The only thing i can figure thats different is the engine is hot. All it does is turn over doesn't start. Anyone have any ideas? It has an MSD ignition and MSD coil.

Usually if the car dies when the engine is hot and then won't restart etc... It is the TFI.

And your car can start, when cold, with a bad TFI.

thank you for helping me. The problem is though the car runs and drives fine when it is at running temperature. If i turn the car off i'll be lucky to get it started again. For a while after i thought it was a bad ground and rewired some stuff it started fine so i thought it was fixed now its doing it again. Does a TFI module also do that? Work for a week or so ad then stop working?

From personal experience, yes, they can be tempermental before they completely take a shit. On my 93, back in the day, I couldn't track down a similar problem for the life of me. I read a Ford Small block book that described different ignition related issues; the TFI being one of them. I bought a new one and it was like my car had been reborn. I never had a problem after that and eventually sold the beast.

Anyway, there is no 100% gaurentee that it IS your TFI, but starting there after all you have checked is your best bet.

im a 99% certain it is the tfi

i have owned 2 with this problem and fixed a buddies with this problem

would always start fine right off the bat from sitting from a day to a few months (ac cobra kit car)

but once i would go somewhere and tunr it off, it wouldnt start, i have been push started by a few people from this board [Frown]

in all three cases the tfi was the cause, a new tfi was the solution, the cobra always started great after that

my other car has been sold and the new owner hasnt told me anything bad

and the buddies car hasnt run for a while but it was working great for the few weeks it ran before we tore it apart

Don't forget the cheaper and easier to fix ECT sensor.

If the computer doesn't know it's warm it'll try to cold start it thus making it run rich if and ever it does fire.

Replacing the TFI i believe hasn't fixed the problem. So far its started up hot but BARELY started, it more like coughs to life. On a side note though it seems to run smoother than it did.
So anyone else have any ideas? Whats the ECT?
