My step-father has a '91 5.0 vert and it seems the tranny took a dump. Makes all sorts of noise trying to get into gear, I'll try to get more specific info. What would be a reasonable rebuild cost for an AOD? Anyone do side jobs in the South Bay?

imo, it is FAR too much to get it rebuilt. Get a working unit out of a car doing a 5 speed swap, like Jersey recently sold, that is known good. Rebuild cost over a grand and you don't get them any stronger than stock, which will go out again in short time, imo.
