Would a leaky heater core cause my A/C NOT to blow cold?

When I bought my car I got the A/C fully charged then used the A/C maybe 3 times since. I tried it the other day and it isn't blowing very cold.

I have a leaky heater core so I was wondering if that would cause the A/C to not be cold. If not why wouldn't it blow cold? How do I check to see if its empty? Can I just unscrew that black cap and press the bike tire type thing in.

SOrry for the dumb questions but I want to either have cold A/C or take out the components all together if I can't fix it.

Sounds to me like the system has a leak in it. Heater core should not affect that.

what he said, the heater core has nothing to do with the a/c system. check for leaks and bad core valves. [patriot]

You have to take it to a shop and get ripped off. Or if your lucky you'll have a oil and gas leak and then you just replace the hose thats leaking oil hoping it is also a gas leak too. I got lucky but i still spent over 1,000 to get it repair cause the oil leaked out of the compressor and then the compressor burned up when i used defrost.

Take it to the shop, pay the $50 or so to test the system. Then do the repair work YOURSELF. Don't pay some idiot to change a compressor and a hose a grand. You can get parts much cheaper and do the work, then have it re charged/filled.

oh,...sounds better than $1,000. Now this may sound strange but where would I go to get it tested? I've never taken my car to a shop since I've had it,... other than exhaust.

once I bought an a/c leak detector kit that had a dye that you put into the system... I never got to use it, but a friend of mine had an whisper meter that he used to find small leaks.

you can jumper out the low pressure switch and see if it runs fine then... I had mine fail on me on my old 94

take it to Ford and see how much it is to do a leakdown test. does it have the r134? they will recover ur existing freon if any perform vacumm test then add oil and dye through the low side and recharge system. they use a purple light to look for leaks. [patriot]

I'm still R12. How many pounds does the system hold? Are there any other places OTHER than ford to get a leak down test?? I'd much rather not go to ford and be charged more than my car is worth. [Big Grin]

its a comlete kit w/all the o-rings you need for all lines and connections, also comes with the oil and the r134 conversion sticker. i bought it at Carquest, through my work i work at Saturn so i got it a little cheaper. if you have no leaks in the system then you can get just the fittings for the compressor, like 15 bucks for both.

i just replaced the fittings over to r134, i did not have any leaks, therefore i did not replace any o-rings. Just buy the kit or fittings and have a shop install them and recharge the system. [patriot]
