I have replaced my rear main seal like 3 times in one year. Just recently replaced it like a month ago and it has slow ass leak. Not alot of fluid at all, just enough to notice a little wet spot on the floor when I back out. anyone have any suggestions on how the stop the leak for good?
thanks

I have the same problem on both my stangs! Brand new motors! I hope somebody has a good suggestion...

99% of the time it is not the seal, it's the crankshaft surface. Install a seal-saver next time, you won't have this problem.

what's a seal saver?
my car is down possibly due to a defective rearmain seal.
If i go through this again i just want to do the job once.

yeah I changed my rear main last year, driven the car maybe 3000 miles since then and the starter side of the bellhousing is covered in oil
point us in the direction of the seal saver! I needed to drop my tranny anyways to replace a cracked throw out bearing retainer

The sleeve is Fel -Pro Part #16250 and you will need the instalation tool which is #16300.

make sure your PCV system is working right also..

It's a really inexpensive sleeve that slips over the end of the crank. It is good insurance.

where do u get it?
I have to have my thing replaced it seems. so i might as well put this part in there..
Thanks.

I would look to elsewhere as well. A rear main doesn't just "blow out" after xxx-number of miles. Like CDT said, check your PCV.

so where do u get this inexpensive sleeve?
is there a part number or something i should be have. thanks.
I replaced the rearmain seal and the leaking has fully stopped.. i just want to make sure i have the right part incase/when it starts leaking again.
Thanks.

cool.. i just got it.
Do u have to remove the tranny again to make install this?
or will i be able to do it while i am changing the heads and cam?

the rear main seal is in the rear of the engine so you'd have to pull the tranny
Posted by JohnB (Member # 969) on
:
Yes, this requires a tranny/flywheel pull.

that sucks.. i guess i'll just have to wait until my seal starts leaking again..
