my buddy has got a 92 gt and he was driving from la out to my friends house in AZ. his temp guage shoots up immediatly when he turns on the car even after its sat all night and sits just below the red. when its at the red he stops but the coolant isnt boiling over and their is no steam or smell of any of it. it this just a bad thermistat or gauge or is it somethin else

If the gauge shoots up "immediately" after the car turns on then I would suspect the coolant sensor itself. There are two, one in the manifold and one in the heater lines. One is for the gauge and one tells the computer the motor temp. I don't know which is which.

If the car actually overheats then I would turn on the heater to see if it blows hot. If it is not hot then I would suspect the thermostat.

The engine temperature sending unit is on the lower intake. It looks like an ECT but only has 1 wire. Start the engine, when it goes to red disconnect that one wire and it should read full cold. If you ground that wire it will read full hot. If the guage is working correctly, replace the sending unit.
