What springs are you guys with GT40P's and bigger cams running? The trick is staying with stock valves & retainers...the exhaust installed height is diffrent than the intake, and this is presenting a problem for choosing a set of matched springs that ussually come in a set of 16...

I am trying to runna TFS stage 1 cam or possibly a stage 2?

P/N's please!

I bought a set of springs for my gt-40p heads; edelbrock part # 5822 but I am only going to be running an e-303 cam and the stock springs are fine so I've been told. If you want mine I'll sell em' just make sure to research them for your cam whichever one you go with. Pm me if your interested.

Thanks for the answers guys..

mtbaughs , thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass on those. Looks like they don't allow a high enough lift...http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=551840

1FAST89GT,
The problem with the kits at summit is that I am a complete valve train newbie (but learning slowly) and they don't list those kits you mentioned buy make and model (at least that I could find)...could you help a newb out and give me the part numbers? [Big Grin]

Glenn, thanks for the lead!

I have spent the last week trying to figure out this valve train stuff. I even built a spreadsheet to calculate the seat pressure @ diffrent installed heights, open heights and were the coil bind limits are depending on the installed height and cam lift. The one missing piece I haven't figured out yet are the retainers.
I started this project assuming that
I would need to find two sets of 8 springs each, as the installed heights with the stock hardware are diffrent (measured 1.76 int./1.58 exh.). I wanted a seat pressure of about 120 and an open pressure of about 300. Well after running every spring I could find through my spreadsheet nothing was working, AND I cant seem to buy them in anything but sets of 16. [Roll Eyes]
So I am assuming now that you would need to buy new retainers/locks to change the installed height, but this presents a whole new problem. Nowhere can I find detailed measurements on the retainer geometry and how it relates to the stock valves...so I can now find springs for the desired installed heights and pressures, but have no clue wich retainers are going to get me to that height, or close enough for some shim work. The retainers are also usually sold in sets of 16, so I would ASSUME that they are all the same, wich puts me right back in the same boat as before...diffrent heights for the exh./int. [Mad] to get them all to the same height, I would have to shim like mad, or buy a cutting tool and start eating away at my heads and I'm not too keen on that route. When I started I was hoping that there would be some "magic" spring I could just pop into the existing hardware to clear the .563 exh. lift of the TFS 2 cam.....doesn't sound likely now [Big Grin]

Thanks again for the help.

Interesting....the guy I bought my gt-40p heads from gave them to me and said they were good for higher lift cams. I never researched them because I was told the stock springs could handle an e-303 cam with 1.7's no sweat by numerous people and I am only going to run 1.6's. Do you know the max lift the stock springs can handle?

mtbaughs,
I don't have the spring specs for the stock heads, but have heard from numerous places that .500" is about as high as you want to go with stock springs or rockers. There is probably a little more, but I wouldn't risk it. I could probably find the spec for you somewhere...what heads are you running, is the entire valve train stock? If yo could throw a set of calipers on your springs and give me your installed spring heights I could probably give you an exact #.

do not go anything over .500 lift with gt-40p heads i know from exp.

crane part #crn-44308-1

as for the ford one i lost it so call Tech 'Hot Line' (586) 468-1356 and tell them your set up

here is the cheap solution for running a TFS 1 cam on gt40P's...

Crower # 87048-1 (x8 retainers) 3.85 ea.
Crower # 68315-1 (x8 springs) 4.93 ea.

This will allow a .580 lift with a seat pressure of 124# (1.79 installed height), 311# @ .512 lift and 335# @ .580 lift...

The TFS kit looks like a good alternative as well.
