Pic toward end of this page.

I picked up a nut, stud, and rubber/plastic grommet from Ford. I do not see how these three connect the cable to the tranny arm. When I removed these I guess I just tossed them and did not pay attention. I installed with a nut/bolt and then experienced many problems. Paul and Jersey explained that I needed the original connecting hardware from Ford. I got the three pieces now and do not see how they connect [Frown]

Is the new battery definately good? check the little red wire on the top of the solenoid, the positive wires connection to the solenoid, and the connection to the starter. if they look good, bump it over from the solenoid (the 2 big terminals, with a screwdriver) and see if it fires then (key on).

good luck

Could be the clutch switch!
Check that as well!
Good luck.

maybe a new alternator or check your ground connections. [dance]

could be either a bad starter or starter solenoid. but it also depends on weather or not your stang is an auto or stick, if its auto id check the neutral safty switch, that cause the same prob on my old stang

the car is an automatic with a brand new AOD, so the nuetral safety is definately a possibility. Don- try putting it in neutral and crank on it then.

I have not had much time to mess with the car but I think I figured it out. Originally when I hooked up the linkeage and what not all gears were correct. I drove the car a couple days and parked it at my new place. When I went out two days ago is when the car wouldn't start. I just hopped in the Nissan and figured it was a battery.

Well, I just got in the car to try it again. I released the E-brake and the car rolled back. IT IS IN PARK. I cannot push the button and change gears so I am assuming I just need to get under the car and figure out what position P is and put it in it [Frown]

fuel relay?

Posted by BlueOvalRacing (Member # 1531) on :

Don, have you tried to jump the starter relay just to see if the starter engages? That will tell you which side to start on - ignition/neutral switch or starter/relay.

car won't start because it is in neutral.. not in park... that's why it rolled back too..
Get the right bolt from ford.
It's a funky looking bolt... i had the same issue when i installed a shift kit.
Good luck.
Keep me updated.

The car would start in neutral or park. My guess it's in Drive.

Yes Sal, you are partly correct. When I originally removed the tranny I guess I overlooked the fact that there was a grommet, stud, and nut. When I installed the unit I just grabbed a nut and bolt and tightened them. Well, as a couple of friends have pointed out here after I posted the pic, this was my problem. I went to Ford and they printed me a copy of what I needed so I ordered it for tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it might be on reverse... [Razz]

Ok, I can tell the cable goes over the threaded part and mates with middle divider. But the other end does not fit through the hole on the tranny lever???

The blue bushing gets pushed into the lever, and the pin end of the other piece fits in the bushing. Trying to upload pics here is a pain in the ass sometimes, so try this link:

Paul, do I have everthing facing the correct direction? Will I push the blue grommet into the tranny lever so the stud goes into it in the same direction as i have them lined up in the picture?

Also, as the pic shows toward the end of the first page, do I have the shifter cable on the correct side of the lever or is it supposed to be on the pan side of the lever?

Edit, after looking at your linked pic again, I am assuming that the shifter cable goes on the outside of the lever as I have it bolted in my pic right? I just need to connect them with the correct hardware?

Yup, the pointed end of both the grommet and the pin will face the trans pan. The cable goes on the outside of the bracket.
The easiest way to install that grommet is to put a socket that is a little bit bigger than the hole on the lever on the trans pan side of the lever and use some channel-lock type pliers to squeeze the grommet in. Use some WD40 to help it in. The pin will push into the grommet with the pliers alone.

Sounds good. LAST THING I beleive I need re-assurance on is the adjusting. I should have the shifter in OD and then push the trans lever all the way toward the front of the car. From there go 3 clicks toward the rear and connect the two, right?

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP [patriot]

Yup - push the pin into the grommet, leave the nut loose, put it in o/d and 3 clicks from the front. Cinch down the nut, (make sure that the flats on the pin are in the slot on the cable) and that should do it...

Paul, you said earlier that the lever on the tranny I have is not stock right? the hole on that lever is WAY TO SMALL for the grommet to go through it. Do you suggest making the hole a little bigger to where I can just get the grommet to push into the hole, then get the rest of it in with pliers?

This whole situation is just what I need before X-mas [Roll Eyes]

Posted by BlueOvalRacing (Member # 1531) on :

The hole should be just a little bit smaller than the land on the grommet. The grommet is made to fit tight in the hole of the lever.
It isn't easy getting the grommet in there - it takes some fumbling around before it pushes through. Remember the WD40!

The outer part totally covers the hole and even metal. The first pic gives you a good idea of the size of the hole. Look at the openening of the grommet under that pic.

The grommet doesn't cone enough to even get a nose in the hole.

hang loose - i am gonna go measure the hole in my lever

Posted by hidnn.o.s. (Member # 1219) on :

GOOD IDEA

I just went out and did the same since you were. From what I can see the hole on the lever is 5/16's and the measurement for the grommet is 7/16's.

The hole in the lever is .530" use a 1/2" drill bit to open up the hole. It should be close enough to allow the bushing to go in.
